Shameless BBC apologise over Shankland chant but stay silent on Boyle

On Sunday evening while one group of fans wished death on an injured footballer the Radio Scotland commentator praised supporters for generating a good atmosphere during the lull.

Martin Boyle received seven minutes of treatment before being taken to hospital concussed, he probably had family inside Easter Road listening to that chant as he was attended to by doctors of both clubs.

The usual anti-Catholic and anti-Irish songs were heard throughout the match without comment from the Radio Scotland commentator. Mindful of the Jim Spence treatment Richard Gordon in the studio at Pacific Quay decided to give the chanting a miss even when they revived a chant barely heard in football rounds this century.

45 minutes: ‘In fairness to the fans at Easter Road they are still generating a good atmosphere during this lull’

In complete contrast Alasdair Lamont was providing live television commentary of last night’s match between Morton and Hearts.

With the cameras and microphones directly above the most vocal Morton fans a very personal chant about Lawrence Shankland was heard.

Midway through the second half Lamont made an embarrassed apology to viewers about the chant.

There has been no comment from BBC Scotland about the chants that they broadcast without comment from Easter Road on Sunday. In May 2020 Gregory Campbell of the DUP joined Gordon and Tom English on Sportsound.

Last night Hibs announced that they are cutting away allocations as a result of the chanting during Sunday’s match although they refused to name the club whose supporters were involved.

Ian Maxwell of the SFA hasn’t made any comment about the chants at Easter Road with newly installed sponsor Scottish Gas also on mute, many other power suppliers are available.
