The tweets of Jonny McFarlane are legendary, or comedy gold as some might prefer to brand them.

Unfortunately for the Head of Digital Sport at Newsquest he has only gathered 11,500 Twitter followers as he attempts to create a bright new future for the fading Glasgow publisher where the daily circulation of The Herald and Evening Times is around the 15,000 mark.

Back in his days as an Office Boy at the Daily Record McFarlane came up with the claim that Barrie McKay is a more gifted talent than Kieran Tierney.

Content like that convinced Newsquest that the future was bright in the hands of big Jonny and he hasn’t disappointed.

As well as comparing James Sands (Champions League 2022) to Franco Baresi he took to Twitter to explain why James Tavernier has been more significant and influential than Callum McGregor.

After awarding himself and a few chums a jolly to Germany McFarlane was sharing his expert opinion on the Scotland side selected by Steve Clarke to face Germany. The Gilmour bleating was predictable but bigging up Ryan Porteous is the sort of claim that only a complete fool would make, no match officials outside of Scotland would tolerate the sort of brutality that the Hibs defender regularly dished out.

It is hard to see Porteous escaping with less than a two match suspension after last night’s x-rated lunge at Ilkay Gundogan.

While McFarlane and his chums run up the costs in Germany it is hard to see how it can be justified by digital engagement.

Will pageviews and sessions rise in line with costs?

On You Tube, The Herald has 113 subscribers which is probably all staff members, a videocast previewing the tournament has been watched 72 times in four days.

It is looking very likely that after next weekend McFarlane and the team will have to turn their full attention to the floundering Clement Revolution!

As a refugee from old media the rolling news cycle holds so much appeal. Great to be independently breaking news and staying on top of breaking news.

There is estimated at least 200 thousand Scotland fans in Germany ,presently ? I reckon at least half of them are tabloid scoops and ‘ kid on ‘ scoops there on a freebie and on a jolly boys and girls’ outing …paid for by you and me …. directly and indirectly! BBC radio Scotland have at least 8 scoops plus technicians and producers and much more in Munich alone ,for radio commentary ! On TV the Scottish BBC even have a current affairs guy covering football in Germany plus scores of others …paid for by public licence fee money ! Oh ,and the scoops’ narrative after last night’s humiliation was why did Clark not play ‘ Billy ‘ from the start ?
