Joshua Mulgrew, son of Charlie has signed a professional contract at Celtic.

Yesterday the club announced that nine Academy prospects were taking the step up with Mulgrew Junior among the intake.

Suddenly Charlie switches from being a former Celtic player to becoming the Dad of a current hopeful.

The next step for Joshua will be to get into the Lowland League squad from the u-18s with Celtic B finishing in sixth place in last season’s Lowland League.

Stephen McManus is currently in charge of the Celtic B team which will also compete in the UEFA Youth League which will involve eight matches in the season ahead.

Jonny Hayes has been tipped to join the Celtic coaching staff to work alongside McManus.

As a Dad there shouldn’t be any surprises in store as Joshua gets his professional career underway.

Charlie went through it all in two stints at Celtic, almost making the breakthrough under Gordon Strachan before moving off on a four year tour that covered Wolves, Southend and Aberdeen before returning to Celtic in the summer of 2010 when Neil Lennon took charge.

Six eventful years later he moved on again with five SPL winners medals as Celtic dominated Scottish football, down south Mulgrew had stints at Blackburn, Wigan and Fleetwood before retiring a year ago after two seasons at Dundee United.

With that experience there shouldn’t be much that Joshua encounters that his Dad hasn’t previously gone through.
