Paulo Bernardo has still to complete his expected move to Celtic but A Bola has published his expected salary and contract length!
It is more than seven weeks since the midfielder helped Celtic to win the Scottish Cup at Hampden, yesterday most of that squad flew out to the United States for a three match tour.
Bernardo seems to be in a halfway house. On Friday he was left out of the Benfica squad that played their first pre-season friendly with reports on Monday that he had left Benfica’s training base.
The final deal has still to be signed off but on Tuesday night A Bola reported:
The Portuguese midfielder is expected to earn around €4 million and is set to sign a contract with Celtic until June 2028.
Celtic and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Paulo Bernardo, the Scots say.
Information provided by most of the media that closely follows the Glasgow team’s current affairs indicates that the transfer of the 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder will cost £3.5 million, approximately €4.2 million.
Paulo Bernardo should therefore soon join Celtic, where he did well last season, on loan from the Reds, and where he will have a contract waiting until June 2028.
There are still variants of the contract related to Benfica’s demands, which want to protect itself in relation to a future transfer, with part of the transfer fee or percentage in the deal, as happened when Jota moved from Celtic to Saudi Arabia.
At current exchange rates €4 million over four years works out at around £16,000 a week although there are bound to be bonuses and incentives included.
If wages have been agreed it seems that the sell-on options are holding up the deal with both clubs wanting to get the better of negotiations.
A deal does seem likely, after Jota and Bernardo there must be a decent chance that talks are underway between the two clubs over other transfer targets with the Jota deal working out perfectly for all parties.
16k a week to pump Raskin, Cantwell et al. I’d take 16k a year for it!
