According to Anthony Joseph Belgian side Mechelen have made an offer to sig Stephen Welsh on loan.

The defender has made over 60 appearances over the last four seasons but has rarely been a first pick with a succession of central defender signed in that period.

Welsh signed a new extended contract early last season and seemed to be trusted by Brendan Rodgers ahead of Gus Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki.

Further arrivals are expected in defence this summer, at the age of 24 Welsh is at the stage in his career where he really needs to put together a solid season of appearances and progress.

At 22.58 on Friday Sky Sports reported:

KV Mechelen have made a loan offer for Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh.

A number of other clubs in the English Championship are also interested in the 24-year-old.

It’s understood the Hoops are assessing their centre-back options – and also the possibility of bringing another one in to partner mainstay Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Celtic are open to offers for Gustaf Lagerbielke and Yuki Kobayashi.

Despite playing regularly in Celtic’s four pre-season matches the return of Cameron Carter-Vickers will almost certainly result in Welsh dropping back down the pecking order.

Rodgers would probably prefer to see other central defenders moving out ahead of Welsh but there seems to be solid interest in the Academy graduate that isn’t there for others.

Celtic do require four Academy trained players in their UEFA squads, last season Welsh, Tony Ralston, Callum McGregor and James Forrest filled those slots.
