Dane Murray was a surprise inclusion in the Celtic side at Ayr United last night, playing the second half in central defence wearing the armband after replacing Stephen Welsh.

Three years ago the young defender was pitched in to the first team under Ange Postecoglou, making his debut against Midtjylland after Nir Bitton was sent off against the Danes.

Murray played alongside Welsh in the second half as Celtic lost out unluckily in extra-time in what was to be his only top team start.

Back with the B team he was heavily involved in the Lowland League until injury struck which effectively put his career on hold at the age of 18.

Last season was a complete blank for Murray but after signing a new contract in May it looks like his career could be about to restart.

Great to see Dane Murray back. This is a young guy who I seen when he was first in the team at what 16, 17. Has had a horrendous time with injury but has come back. Physically a great size, moves well and really pleased for him that he has got minutes on the field for Celtic.

A lot of the other younger players to get that chance to come in and play. And like I said it is very important, as well as them developing their fitness, its shown they have the personality to come in and play for Celtic. That is always important for me for young players that they can come in and play with no fear, and go show that.

With Maik Nawrocki joining Gus Lagerbielke on the injury list there is every chance that Murray could be in the squad that flies to the USA later this month for three high profile friendlies.

Good to see and hope he progresses well…

PS – Anyone know how you pronounce his Christian name – Is it Dane (as in a person from Denmark) or is it Danny (as in Danny McGrain) !
