Even by their own crazy standards it was something of a shock this morning when it was announced that Phil Clement had signed a new contract, running until June 2028 rather than his initial deal which ran for 12 months less.
While the media messengers are out sharing the good news not every fan is backing the decision with the timing strange at best.
Firstly there is absolutely no outside interest in Clement who seemed helpless as his side’s challenge for the SPFL title fell apart spectacularly, turning a lead into an eight point deficit by the end of the 23/24 campaign.
Getting a favourite player signed onto a new contract is often times to give a short term boost, Celtic did it as recently as January with Cameron Carter-Vickers even though he was out injured at the time.
The new deal for Clement looks like it was driven by the former Monaco boss, with the issues of the club out in the open the last thing that they require is giving Graeme Souness a phone call to help out with recruiting a new manager.

Clement already had three years to run on his deal, his failings in the last two months of the 23/24 season has cost the club around £40m although that could be retrieved if they get through two rounds of Champions League qualifiers.
August looks like being a defining month with no matches taking place at Ibrox with Chairman John Bennett at pains to avoid a return date from their temporary home at Hampden.
Over the next five days Clement takes a new look team short on experience to Tynecastle and Poland, by the time those matches are over it could very well be the case that the manager is far more grateful than the club to have an extra 12 months sitting on his deal.
Todd Cantwell has yet to react to Clement’s new deal.
It’ll be great fun when/if things start going tits up again, and we now have an even longer contract to pay off.

Absolutely bonkers!! Hasn’t beat them yet and there doesn’t seem to be a style of play. I get wat the board are thinking but wat happens if we don’t win the mara lose to Kiev and get beat at parkhead? Very negative but very likely

Ok decision weird timing

PC must have instigated this, timing is unusual & why would the board choose to do this on eve of what could be a difficult few months.
Seen lots of people say they love it..
Seen same people say he needs to get into CL, beat Celtic in August, can’t have both.— Sam Darnold (@SamDarnoldJNR) August 2, 2024
Total nonsense. No need for it. Misguided attempt at showing solidarity/commitment when simply not sacking him should suffice

Totally idiotic. Stupid. Needless.

BREAKING: Philippe Clement has been awarded a new contract at Rangers on the back of his success in 2023/24, when he won the league with a 3-3 draw at Ibrox.
— Paddy Power (@paddypower) August 2, 2024
Extra years severance pay for him when he gets bumped at Christmas.
It’s quite telling when Mr Clem- on says that he is in love with everything about his club /clumpany ! That presumably includes all the ingrained bigotry ,the lies and deception , the corrupt practices and the poverty and austerity thrust upon theRangers fans ..every season ? I suppose it helps a lot when the average SMSM scoop is so much of a brown nose nodding dog to him that they can tell what he had for supper last Monday evening !
Prob say or sign anything after sipping from that 3 handled spu.k bucket.
To take a new club to 2nd place is actually quite good. Not sure he’ll be able t repeat that without the false finances.
Ha!Ha!Ha!, Paddy Power: ” Philippe Clement has been awarded a new contract at Rangers on the back of his success in 2023/24, when he won the league with a 3-3 draw at Ibrox.” Fukkin brilliant and hell slap it intae thum, Ha!Ha!Ha!
Honestly thought he would walk away,
but maybe he just decided to take advantage of a seriously
wounded sevco?
So, fair play.
Clement [or his agent] has squeezed out improved terms
in a period of increasing austerity at ibrox.
At least Bennett has one less thing to worry about,
for the time being… 🙂
Thickest Cunts on the planet lol! Le Flip Flops offski Sept 1st WHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
What he is saying is it will take another 4 years for him to stop Celtic. he wants time to build the team for the …… we’re coming time again in 4 years, and if he fails they can sack him with 6 months left on his NEW contract. ?
This is what’s known as a sweetner/bribe to play the game. Here’s a little extra money because we lied to you, now we want you to lie to the fans. Clement showing how much it costs to ditch his morals. Just business!!
