Deluded Douglas Ross rewrites history over Celtic fans banner

Douglas Ross has been chatting to Graham Spiers about the banner created for him by Celtic fans at a Scottish Cup tie in February 2023.

With his Westminster income stream cut off at last month’s General Election things are looking bleak for the former MP who was forced into resigning as leader of the Scottish Tories after doing the dirty on neighbouring MP David Duguid who was in hospital at the time he was de-selected.

Fortunately the electorate of Aberdeenshire North and Moray East agreed with the sentiment on the banner and handed the constituency to Fergus Ewing of the SNP.

Ross now faces a massive loss of income with his credibility among the Tory party even lower than it is across Scotland as a whole.

Fortunately the SFA can bail him out with football appointments on very generous expenses as supporters comment on his weight problems and question his paternity.

With those sort of characteristics he was right at home with Spiers as he tried to reinvent himself as a good bloke with an eye on a media career with Sportsound on the BBC alongside Kenny Macintyre and Bobby Madden the most natural source of easy money.

During a Scottish Cup tie between Celtic and St Mirren in 2023, the Green Brigade supporters’ group revealed a huge banner that read “VAR DECISION: DOUGLAS ROSS IS A C***”.

It came after a goal by Daizen Maeda was reviewed by the video technology.

Mr Ross was running the line as an assistant referee during the contest.

Speaking to the journalist Graham Spiers, Mr Ross said he hoped that because the “word that rhymes with hunt” was used in the banner, “it wouldn’t really get reported.”

“It turns out they could, but just fit in asterisks.”

He said he had speaking about it recently with the sons of friends who had not realised he was the “Celtic banner boy.”

It was in a Scottish Cup game, it was a late kickoff, and I remember I just awarded a goal to a Celtic. It was the first goal of the match.

“It was a tight onside, offside decision. I kept my flag down. VAR confirmed straight away that the goal was good.

“So my first point was, why are they putting that up? I’ve made a decision correct in favour of Celtic. You know, if I got it wrong, I could understand that.

“And then I thought secondly, I don’t want to look at it too much, because I don’t want a picture taken of me staring at this. But still, they managed to do it.

“And then I just thought, well, it’s done now, I thought that looks pretty big, but maybe I’ve just got such great eyesight as a linesman that it’s bigger than it actually is.”

The banner had nothing to do with the VAR decision but was a comment on Ross’ pitiful life which first came to terms when he expressed his hatred for travelling people.

That helped accelerate his promotions through the Tory party and SFA.

Now as he attempts a makeover with Spiers he’s trying to rewrite the second most infamous incident of his career, the other was barking red card to Willie Collum to get Jozo Simunovic sent off at Ibrox in March 2018.
