According to Sky Sports Brighton are in talks with Celtic over a deal to sign Matt O’Riley.

Southampton and Atalanta have been strongly linked with signing the midfielder but none of the reports have been described as being ‘in talks’.

Brighton might not be viewed as the most glamorous option to O’Riley but they have established a reputation as one of the best run clubs in the game with a scouting and recruitment set up that provides ready made players for clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Just before 4pm today Sky Sports reported:

Brighton are in talks with Celtic over a deal for Matt O’Riley, with Chelsea among a number of other clubs interested in the midfielder.

O’Riley has been the subject of bids from Atalanta this summer, and he has further interest from other clubs in the Premier League and abroad.

Sky Sports News also reported over the weekend that he is among a number of options being considered by Chelsea to replace Conor Gallagher, should he complete his proposed move to Atletico Madrid.

If a fee can be agreed between the clubs the decision would be down to O’Riley who will know all about the reputation Brighton has after he spent a decade in the Fulham Academy.

Celtic may be more open to a deal with Brighton provided they get more than the usual 10% add on to any transfer fee.

Reporting on a profit of £122.8m for the year to 30 June 2023 ESPN explained:

Their eye-catching figure is largely based on outgoing transfers. Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma (to Tottenham Hotspur), Spain defender Marc Cucurella (to Chelsea), Belgium forward Leandro Trossard (to Arsenal) and Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister (to Liverpool) all left the club during this period, leading to a profit of £121.4m. Brighton also received around £21m in compensation when losing head coach Graham Potter to Chelsea.

Last September O’Riley renewed his Celtic contract with a deal running until May 2027.

As a refugee from old media the rolling news cycle holds so much appeal. Great to be independently breaking news and staying on top of breaking news.

It could be the right move for MO’R from a football viewpoint. For it to be the right move for Celtic though, the fee has to be big and with a tasty sell-on too.

  • Terence Nova says:

Would rather he stayed …but we need the money.

  • Martin Blackshaw says:

There’s no way Matt O’Riley is going to move to Brighton, a mid-table EPL side with no European football. He’ll hang on for a bigger team than that before making his next step up the ladder. As for the Chelsea link, Football Insider declares that to be fake news.

Surely there must protests or the boycotting of merchandise now should there be any truth in this article.

What really will be a right good boot in the chuckies would be the transfer went through for Matt and the Grifters on the board pockeled the money.

  • KC67 says:

Hope he refuses to go to get it right up Lawwell. We all know they wouldn’t spend the money anyway.

  • Eamonn Little says:

Although there is an inevitability about Matt’s departure and I think the majority of us are resigned to it now,we really need bodies IN the building before we sanction any more outgoings. It really does scream asset strip to me.This window has been an absolute mare so far.
