James McCarthy has left the building

It is one of the great Celtic mysteries of recent seasons but according to the Etims podcast it seems that James McCarthy has left the building.

The midfielder signed as a free agent almost exactly three years ago alongside Joe Hart following Celtic’s opening day SPFL defeat away to Hearts at Tynecastle. While Hart got a three year contract McCarthy signed a four year deal.

It is fair to say that their careers took off in different directions with the midfielder never getting off the ground at Celtic following stints in England at Wigan, Everton and Crystal Palace.

After a total of 27 appearances, 21 of them as a substitute it seems that an agreement has been reached on the final year of the midfielders contract.

McCarthy’s last first team appearance was away to Motherwell in a League Cup tie in October 2022 which was also Ben Siegrist’s second and final Celtic appearance.

Last season the midfielder did play twice in the Lowland League for Celtic B.

At the age of 33 McCarthy should be able to play on at a lower level but it seems that starting out as a 16-year-old at Hamilton Accies has taken a toll on his body.

Who gave this guy a four year contract. Shocking waste of money at his age , whoever sanctioned this should be chased out the building

  • Captain Swing says:

This signing was clearly never sought or driven by the manager so was therefore a complete and utter waste of money. Probably driven by DD like the signing of Roy Keane – and Robbie Keane for that matter – although both those signings look dazzlingly successful compared to McCarthy who after years of serious injuries was clearly never capable of playing at our level.

  • Pan says:

He should never have been in the building.
In my opinion, it shows how incompetent our so-called Board is.

  • TicToc says:

I watched the mini huns host the new huns today and it wasn’t too bad to watch. Both seemed to be going for it and not too much anti-football which is a relatively rare thing when watching football in Scotland. And 0-0 at FT, what’s not to like?

  • Kevin Dunne says:
