James Tavernier is living the dream and looking forward to starting his 10th season of failure at Ibrox.

There has been an intensive campaign to transfer the former Wigan journeyman out of Ibrox but in the real world no-one will match the salary of a right-back that can’t defend never mind shelling out on a mega-bucks transfer fee.

Trabzonspor have provided a new home for John Lundstram and Borna Barisic but have drawn the line at Tavpen despite a claim of interest from Fabrizio Romano.

After becoming the highest scoring defender in British history last season things went badly wrong for the one time Newcastle defender with the smiling face of Daizen Maeda largely responsible for Tav’s season falling apart in the spring time.

Even loyal bears had to admit it that their captain couldn’t cut it with Celtic’s goal after 22 seconds at Ibrox in April highlighting the issues.

Two defeats to Celtic in May saw the hoops take their trophy total to 118 with Tav having a close up view of 19 of those successes.

The only consolation from the closing weeks of the season was getting through an interview after the Scottish Cup Final without mentioning the word disappointed, instead he opted to use devastated to describe his side’s third Hampden defeat to the hoops in 15 months.

Reacting to the Daily Record’s obsession over a move to Al Ettifaq and a reunion with Steven Gerrard, Tavernier said:

I just don’t take any notice, basically. There has been speculation for a long time now if it’s a year and a half. I addressed it towards the end of last season, I am fully committed to the job in hand.

That’s where my mindset will always be, fully committed, coming day by day and trying my extreme hardest to push myself and the team on.

To do what I do every single day is to be a professional footballer, it’s like I’m 18 again. Every single day there is joy for me to come in to train, I am living the dream.

Explaining why he missed the first couple of pre-season matches Tavpen added:

It is obviously unusual for me to miss but with it being pre-season it was a perfect time to rest my hip flexor.

I had a bit of fluid in there so it was a perfect time not just to push through it and let it settle down.

Sitting on the sidelines watching the lads training it was hard to do but my body feels a lot better now so getting two games underneath my belt before the season starts was key. Me, personally, I am ready to go.

At one stage last month the Daily Record reported that Super Jack Butland had been handed the club captaincy but that story was quickly watered down then deleted.

Next summer Tav should get his well deserved Testimonial match although finding a venue could be a problem.

Living the dream. The only dream he’s living for is a wet one.

  • Captain Swing says:

So, to sum up…. we already know he’s crap but in this interview he has also helpfully confirmed he is staying put for the last year of his lucrative contract unless some putz decides to offer him even more cash, especially as his word suggest he is also crocked with what sounds like the beginning of a chronic hip issue – meaning he would likely fail the medical for any potential transfer anyway!

The good news is absolutely beginningless over there, eh?

As an aside, Elite have no chance either way of winning the court case as the legal system favours Sevco irrespective of the evidence and if by some miracle they should win they will have no chance of getting the money out of them.
    God luck with that.
