Football - Scottish Premier League - 29/4/89 Rangers' manager Graeme Souness gives an interview Mandatory Credit: Action Images
Graeme Souness believes that the only difference between the two major Glasgow clubs is in front of goal.
The former Scotland captain is a distant observer of the Scottish game where Celtic have won seven of the last nine domestic trophies, crucially including three successive SPFL Premiership titles.
After 12 matches of the current campaign Celtic are 11 points ahead of their city rivals who have dropped points against four Premiership clubs this season as well as taking a 3-0 defeat at Celtic Park.
Phil Clement has been in charge for more than a year with the gap to Celtic growing in that time.
Many Ibrox fans are expecting a change in management but according to Souness the only difference between the two clubs is that Celtic have better strikers.
The Daily Record reports the former Rangers boss saying:
Right now he’s managing a group of players who are behind Celtic and I’ll be criticised for saying this but I don’t see any great gulf between the two teams. I was at an Old Firm cup final last season and a league game between them last season and didn’t see one team out-footballing the other team,
What I do see is Celtic having players who do the most important thing and that is being able to consistently put the ball into the net more than Rangers do.
Celtic have better strikers and the stats bare that out. I don’t see one team dominating another team or any enormous gulf but they have better goalscorers and that can never be underestimated.
Clement has had two transfer windows to improve his squad with Hamza Igamane the only striker signed on a permanent basis, despite his heroics against Nice the Moroccan has yet to score in domestic football.
It is hard for anyone rational to state a case for anyone at Ibrox to earn a place in a Combined XI but as ever Souness finds comfort living in denial.
By 5pm today Celtic could be 14 points ahead of Clement’s side who face St Johnstone tomorrow knowing that they have scored only twice away from home in five SPFL matches this season.

If the amount of ex managers ,players ,referees , affiliates and guests working in the SMSM , of a theRangers persuasion shall we say , were to be counted towards winning the title and cups in Scotland, the tribute act would be way out in front …every season ? I’d love to see the stats for that diabolical fact …a table or graph of names who work in the Scottish media and which club/ clumpany they support ? Don’t get me started on the amount of media scoops there are of the same ilk ….
Sueness is a chancer .he’s also a bully..a liberty taker and tax fraud.
Football will be a better place when he’s pumped for good.
Only takes 1 decent result for the scum, for sourpuss to make a guest appearance?
Where has he been hiding for the past number of weeks, in his defence of the baldy Belgium waffler, who sourpuss was so influential in appointing in the first place?
We will prove yet again just how big the gap is, at the league cup final?
And sourpuss can return to his coffin, this time with the lid nailed down for good?
Peeness has now taken to putting his underpants on his head, sticking a pencil up each nostril and saying ” Wibble “.
Those whom the Gods would destroy, they first make mad, and Sourness is now stark raving batshit BONKERS.
Celtics goals come from all over the pitch. Mind the gap Sourness
What Sourness knows about Scottish football in 2024 u could fit inside his “gizza job” moustache…never been anything less than a horrible human being.
Senile Auld Barsteward.. Belongs in a Care Hame!
Yes, the only difference is in front of goal. All the way back to the other goals.
Who’s bothered what he says?
Significantly better in terms of goal scoring – surely there lies the gulf??!! ????
