Not for the first time, and probably not for the last, the Sports Desk at the Daily Record went too early in their mission to bring good news to their army of readers.
The earth shattering impact of the win over Nice was still causing shock waves across the world of football when further good news turned up on Twitter.
Who could have guessed that over the course of four failed managers the Ibrox Tribute Act were actually the second best team in UEFA competitions over the last five years?
Surely at that stage someone in touch with reality at the Record would think ‘Surely not?’ A period covering Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Champions League record breakers couldn’t have produced a better record than Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig and the traditional heavyweights of European football.
In mid-morning, without any cross referencing, the Record rushed out the good news to their army of readers, reinforcing the feel-good factor from Nice despite knowing that the 22/23 and 23/24 seasons from their favourite club were less than vintage they were actually the second best performing club in Europe.
In trademark style the Record announced:
Only Ajax have a better record than Rangers in UEFA competitions over the past five years.
The Ibrox club have outperformed just about all of Europe’s football royalty to sit second in the overall UEFA country rankings. The time period of course includes their run to the 2022 Europa League Final, while their season-on-season results (aside from the disastrous 2022/23 Champions League campaign) have seen them rack up a score of 16.825 points.
Unfortunately that total, table and tweet was from two years ago. The time period of course includes the record breaking 22/23 Champions League campaign.
The original tweet that created the excitement was-
The 100 most successful clubs in the last 5 international seasons
Can we please appreciate for a moment what @gnkdinamo pulls off year after year?
Other clubs from smaller leagues in top 10: Rangers, Crvena zvezda

But later today Swiss Football Data owned up to their error.

Last season Ajax were knocked out of the Europa League at the group stage then at the Round of 16 of the UEFA Conference. Alas being seventh in the table isn’t much to celebrate with no chance of the Ibrox Tribute Act taking part in next summer’s inaugural World Championship in the USA.
In other news no billionaires have ever emerged from the streets of Motherwell, the Lanarkshire town did provide Scottish football with a very naughty boy in May 2011.
Ah the Daily Liar strikes again all in the hope of stopping it’s sales heading down the cludgie, lol to late Billy Liar that ship has sailed,a long time ago.
Next they will be telling us that the runners up or possibly the team to finish 3rd in the league will automatically go straight into the champions league league league without qualifiers.
Imagine that publication not checking their data sources are accurate. It screams wrong from first view. But it keeps the peeple happy so publish.
Aw naw!
We’re crap and the Rainjurz are fandababbydozie – it says so in the Daily Rekkurd….

How desperate do you need to be to believe this P1111111555555HHHHHH?
There is more truth coming out of Big Donald’s mouth than out the daily sevco.
Infact there is more truth to read in The Digger than there is in the daily sevco.
