Record owners Trinity Media are regularly involved in cost cutting exercises and redundancy schemes as they try to plot a digital future away from the traditional print rolls.
Increasingly they are involved with video which sees their remaining football reporters producing a Hotline show at 6pm most evenings.
Hugh Keevins, Barry Ferguson and Chris Sutton contribute columns to Record Sport but with their views widely available elsewhere they could soon be in line for the same fate as Cowan.
The Motherwell fan still co-hosts Off The Ball on Radio Scotland at the weekend and is a popular figure on the After Dinner circuit with celebrities such as David Tanner and Peter Martin.
