Yer teas oot! Keown pleads for three Ibrox flops to be axed over £40m loss

Despite, and partly because of the incredible win over Nice, Gary Keown has carried out an assassination job on three key figures at Ibrox.

The phrase that ‘your teas out’ might be new on Cyriel Dessers, Phil Clement and Nils Koppen but the tone of today’s opinion piece in the Daily Mail doesn’t require any translation skills.

Basically Dessers was signed, Clement selects him and Koppen has wasted two transfer windows unable to get rid of the Nigerian or find a replacement.

Two goals from Hamza Igamane against Nice proved to be a real head scratcher for most bears, the Moroccan Messi has failed to score in domestic football but now has three to his name in UEFA’s secondary competition, the one that you drop into after getting beaten on aggregate by Dinamo Kiev.

The win against Nice set back the timeline for Clement to be removed but that could be revived at any time, today after the match against St Johnstone is an option as is Wednesday’s home game against Kilmarnock.

Bringing together his anger and frustrations in the Daily Mail, Keown writes:

Clement hung his hat on Dessers and got what you’d expect in return. As for Koppen, you have to ask why he didn’t see the need for a ready-made alternative and get Dessers out the door.

There were teams in Italy having a sniff, although that interest did not result in a concrete bid. However, reports stated that MLS outfit Atlanta United were primed to pay £4.5m for him — with Dessers supposedly kyboshing the move in the end.

With that in mind, it seems all the more crazy that he was still the main option up front until Igamane barged him out of the way on Thursday.

There’s an Old Firm cup final in a fortnight and the youngster is surely now in pole position to start with Danilo as his chief understudy.

Dessers’ tea is finally out, but it’s too late to salvage the league title that slipped through the club’s hands last season. It’s too late to make this term’s title race a contest either. And the £40m that could have come from Europe is long gone too.

It’s why Clement’s tea is out as well, no matter what happens in the Europa League. Whether Koppen deserved his promotion on the back of all this — along with other issues relating to overall recruitment plus the exact degree of relevant experience on his CV — is a matter for further discussion.

Helpfully, there’s a club AGM on Thursday at which the Belgian and the other top bananas will be open to interrogation on all that and more.

Failure to take six points will see the anger levels back to normal levels but with long term contracts getting rid of Clement, Dessers and Koppen will be a very expensive business.

Since Clement was appointed at Ibrox both Micky Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have been appointed and sacked from new jobs in management.
