Internacional appear to be running out of hope to sign Alexandro Bernabei.
In footballing terms the loan deal for the Celtic defender worked out perfectly, the player gained regular football with his club shooting up the table thanks in no small part to the their loan star being voted as the best left-back in Brazilian football.
The practical side of the game, the raw economics now come into play with the market value of Bernabei out of Internacional’s reach.
In football development terms another loan deal with Internacional would make sense but after a breakthrough season Celtic have the opportunity to turn around a nice profit on their £3.5m signing from Lanus in the summer of 2022.
Pocking up on a report from Brazil, The Sun reports Internacional vice-President Jose Bisol saying:
Alexandro Bernabei has settled into the club. He wants to stay at Internacional but we are not going to be financially irresponsible.
The club has financial limits and we laid them out to Celtic. It’s up to them and I hope for a positive outcome.
After his form in Brazil Celtic are likely to have interest in Bernabei from South America and Europe, most likely Italy where Bernabei holds a passport.
There seems to be nothing to suggest a fresh start at Celtic even if the defender officially returns to the Scottish Champions on January 1.
Greg Taylor and Alex Valle are currently competing for the left-back berth with Kieran Tierney strongly linked with a return to the hoops, in a January loan or an a permanent basis in the summer.
What I have to say is this!
Bernabei and Valle are excellent LB’s. We should look to keep Valle permanently. However, if the Internacional offer is all that they can afford and Celtic are still making a decent profit on him then Celtic should look do a deal, even if it does not maximise their profit. Inter have helped the player to develop and so deserve some honourable treatment. This, despite the fact that Celtic may get more for him elsewhere.
We would, of course, hope that Barcelona would treat us fairly if we were to desire to sign Valle. There is not enough honour in football.
Sorry mate, but that is nonsense; he’s our player, who we shelled out a fair chunk of cash for and massively increased his earnings. Internacional have had use of our player for a season without that same outlay of transfer & signing on fees, and according to their president the terms of the loan agreement were particularly agreeable to them, so we’ve already done them a favour. If his time there has saw his market value increase then we are fully entitled to look to maximise our ROI, we do not exist to subsidise clubs in other countries just because they can’t meet our asking price for our players, if he’s worth what we’re asking for then another club that can afford it will pay it.
Valle has a €3 million release clause, which was reduced from €30 million when he signed a new deal with Barca before coming to us on loan. If we put that amount on the table then the decision rests solely with the player, the only way Barca ‘treating us fairly’ would come in to it would be if we went in with an offer below that figure and tried to negotiate.
Did Palmeiras not have an offer accepted for £7m when Internacional thought they’d get him for the £3.5m we paid & therefore make an instant profit of £3.5m UNTIL Celtic found out & now they’re waiting until 1st January to buy direct from Celtic, not very honourable of Internacional…..more like being sleekit but business is business so highest bidder to fund our purchases in January….??

His loan going well has worked in our favour in terms of his profile and market value, so we should be looking to capitalise while his stock is high and get as much as we can for him.
Greg Taylor pops up all over the feckin’ park…and we’re being told that this guy doesn’t suit our system…??…That don’t make sense to me…I heard his off-field antics were the problem…but that never gets mentioned…We shall see.
Try reading the article I posted mate, I put it there for a reason.
I had a look but lost interest fairly quickly in such a long read. It’s all just theory and football is more dynamic than it credits so I don’t think it’s anywhere near definitive.
That’s just my opinion on the article you posted, so no change from me.
My more serious concern was with Bernabei’s off-field behaviour. I’m pretty sure he got done for drink-driving and that’s a serious concern without doubt.
Anyway, I trust Brendan and will back his decisions in most cases.
He did, within about a week of getting here I think, dunno if he was hammered or just unaware that one pint is pretty much your whack here though as I imagine our limit is likely lower than it is in Argentina, so could have been more of a misunderstanding than a major disciplinary issue. Pretty sure he turned up late for training which saw him bombed out of a squad not long before he went on loan too, though would the manager had decided he didn’t have a future with us long before then anyway.
Best analogy I can think of to summarise what the article says would be if we think of players as computers – if we sign players from Europe then it’s just a case of adding new software until they’re running as we want them to, but with Bernabei, and Argentinian players in European football in general, you have to wipe the hard drive and install a new operating system due to the completely different philosophies on how the game is played. We signed a good player, but a lot of what we asked him to do within the team structure is completely alien to him as he has never played the game that way, and it makes sense when you think how he would be caught out of position.
