Neil McCann has refused to share his opinion on whether or not Phil Clement will see out the season in charge at Ibrox.
The Belgian Beale has led a charmed life this season after failing to reach even the Play Off stage in the Champions League qualifiers, losing the League Cup Final and falling further behind in the SPFL Premiership than Micky Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst were allowed before they were sacked.
The absence of a CEO to make the obvious decision has allowed Clement to continue while a freak win over Celtic earned him three days of acclaim from McCann and other media placemen.
Reality returned with draws away to Hibs and Dundee, fans aggressively called for Clement to be sacked but they were left frustrated by Paddy Stewart’s backing for the manager who claimed that he had 200% support from the boardroom.
The waffling resumed yesterday, before and after a 3-1 win over St Johnstone. Clement limps on with McCann bottling out of answering the only question that matters from yesterday’s home win at Ibrox.
Jonathan Sutherland is hardly Jeremy Paxman but former Dundee boss McCann got very defensive as the Daily Record reported from Sunday’s edition of Sportscene:
And McCann, who won three league titles as a player at Ibrox, said: “It didn’t surprise me. I think Patrick Stewart has had a big job on his hands. He was straightforward and said he’s giving the manager his backing but results need to improve. That’s obvious.
“If you’re reading between the lines, the statement carries enough… ‘Threat’ isn’t the word, but it’s a message to the fans that he’s said to the manager ‘the away form needs to pick up, the results need to be better, the consistency needs to be better.’ Otherwise, Philippe Clement will lose his job.”
Sutherland then pressed McCann on whether Clement will see out the season as Rangers boss. And the pundit replied: “The question is an aggressive one, Jonathan. I’m not going to answer it as a yes or a no but he is under enormous pressure, and if he doesn’t get the results, Rangers will make the decision.”
McCann is on auto-pilot to put the boot into Celtic, no-one was surprised by his views on the two penalty decisions at Ross County on Saturday.
After a spell managing Dundee the former Scotland winger is currently grasping as much media work as he can in order to pay off a second defeat to the taxman alongside the costs of divorce.
A return to coaching at Tynecastle or Ibrox is clearly his target as he avoids upsetting anyone at either club in the hope that he can find his way back inside the game.
