The Sunday Mail is on course to run out of print readers by the end of this decade.
During December average sales of the Glasgow based newspaper dipped to just 42,044, a staggering 5% drop on November and a year on year drop of 20.4%
It isn’t exactly news that print circulation is falling but the figures for December are stark, buyers are deserting the Mail in droves while the decline of other titles such as the Daily Record is less severe.
Monday to Saturday the Record averaged sales of 45,179 during December, a monthly drop of only 0.9% and year on year drop of 16.9%.
First column is December sales, next is monthly drop, third is year-on-year drop
These days focus is on digital production, page-views, sessions and impressions are increasingly significant but print sales still delivers a volume of advertising alongside a cover price with the Sunday Mail now at £2.90. That price came in on January 5 which is unlikely to boost this month’s circulation figures.
With a cover price of £1.70 and its own website the Record is keeping slightly ahead of the tide in terms of circulation figures.
Celtic fans have dozens of dedicated websites, podcasts and social media outlets keeping them upto date with the latest everything on their mobile phones, a Daily Record website could live on into the next decade but the resources will be much lower as content matches advertising income, the days of sending reporters on European trips will very much be something from a different era.
