Away from the dramas of media conferences Celtic defeated Dundee United 2-0 last night to move an impressive 16 points clear at the top of the SPFL Premiership table.

That could be reduced to 13 tonight if Phil Clement’s side win away to Dundee but despite the defeat in the Glasgow Derby they are being given no encouragement from their city rivals.

Brendan Rodgers named the same side that defeated St Mirren on Sunday but during the warm-up Nicolas Kuhn had an issue with his thigh or hip, dropped out and was replaced by Yang Hyun-jun.

Celtic started impressively, they pushed down both flanks with Auston Trusty sending an early header against the bar.

The opening goal arrived in the 23rd minute. Probing down the right Luke McCowan won the ball at the edge of the box, when his shot was parried by goalkeeper Tom Walton Daizen Maeda was first to react to steer home the opening goal.

Celtic had 83% possession during the first half but at the interval their only reward was the goal from Maeda.

The second half was a bit more balanced, United had a flurry of corners early on in the half but the Celtic defence stood firm with Kasper Schmeichel well protected.

With a single goal lead going into the last 10 minutes there are always some nerves but a double dummy from Paulo Bernardo created a chance for Reo Hatate in the 83rd minute which was emphatically finished.

Celtic now face trips to Ross County and Dundee on Saturday and Tuesday as they bring a very intensive run of SPFL fixtures to a close with Kilmarnock o be faced on January 25 as the defence of the Scottish Cup is opened.
