Celtic’s incredible UEFA pay out puts paltry SPFL deal in perspective

From 10 matches in the Champions League Celtic will be paid more than the total awarded to 42 clubs for a season in the SPFL.

Those figures are essentially made up from broadcasting and sponsorship deals with Celtic one of 36 clubs getting a cut of the largest ever cake produced by UEFA.

The main aspect of the SPFL deal is from broadcasting with Sky Sports paying £25m a year for first choice including four Glasgow Derbies, Premier Sports have picked up a secondary package with Celtic refusing to switch home matches for a £75,000 pay out.

Clearly the UEFA pay out knocks the SPFL deal into the shade but you need to be Scottish champions to gain entry to the Champions League. For winning the SPFL last season Celtic were paid £4.272m.

Ticket sales and hospitality for home matches will top £3m on Champions League nights, taking off VAT and other costs should provide around £10m clear from five matches.

Aside from that the transfer value of players is almost certain to have increased- Daizen Maeda scored four times with Nicolas Kuhn scoring against RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich.

Next season, if they win the SPFL Celtic will go into the Play Off round, facing a two legged tie to return to the Champions League group stage for the fourth season running.
