The Daily Record has broken rank with other messengers by claiming that Phil Clement will pick up a significantly higher pay-off than the agreed figure of £1.2m.

Soon after the Scottish Cup defeat to Queens Park The Sun came up with that figure which was repeated across the board, much like the various add-ons to the Malik Tillman deal.

After a few weeks of negotiations Clement agreed to a three and a half year in October 2023, with stints at Club Brugge, Monaco and Genk on his CV, winning two Belgian titles was repeated constantly as he was presented as A Proper Football Manager.

A basic salary of around £2m a year would seem reasonable bearing in mind the Ibrox club has splashed out £15m plus massive wages on Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers and Danilo just a few months earlier.

After a stunning start to life at Ibrox reality arrived with Clement’s side blowing the double in the last two months of the season, starting with a 3-3 Moral Victory over Celtic on April 8.

Failure to deliver kicked off a deep austerity drive, rather than walk away he agreed to a new contract, running until May 2028, an extra 12 months.

At that time Clement was still regarded as A Proper Football Manager, he had the upper hand in negotiations. No competent agent would have taken a salary cut or watered down the severance terms.

Last night Scott Burns of the Daily Record reported

Philippe Clement is entitled to a significantly higher pay off from Rangers?than has previously been suggested.

The Ibrox?hierarchy confirmed on Sunday night that they had taken the decision to remove the Belgian as their head coach. The final details of his settlement are currently being thrashed out between the Ibrox side and Clement’s representatives. Reports last week claimed that Clement’s settlement figure was £1.2 million but the figure is significantly higher.

Clement’s severance terms were upped substantially when he signed his new contract in the summer. It has been suggested that Clement had agreed to forgo half his pay-off. Even if that was the case he would still be entitled to a seven figure departure deal. It remains to be seen if Clement gets a lump sum or will be left on gardening leave.

Rangers will also have to pay-out more than six figures to pay off a number of Clement’s coaches and staff. First-team coaches Alex Rae?and Stephen van der Hayden, along with goalkeeping coach were all deemed surplus to requirements yesterday.

Only a few people will know the details of the pay-off, Clement won’t be looking at another job until the summer at the earliest.

A full pay-out is unlikely but a lump sum just now with his salary continuing until he gets another job seems likely, up until the defeat from St Mirren Clement was adamant that he’d be sticking with the project and his exciting young team.

In January a further internal share issue was used against £3.5m, that change was only released to Companies House on February 18.

With very little in the way of a summer transfer budget to offer a new manager there is every chance that Barry Ferguson will be kept on as Paddy Stewart implements the 25-30% wage cuts that Clement discussed before the recent match away to Hearts.

James Tavernier, Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell are under contract until May 2026. Jack Butland, Ridvan Yilmaz, Dujon Sterling, Nicky Raskin and Dessers are under contract until May 2027. Danilo, signed for £6m from Feyenoord by Beale has a contract running until May 2028!
