The Daily Record is going all in with Fergie Fever!
Not only is the former Alloa boss the favourite to take over from Phil Clement as manager but the Record are speculating on who will be joining Fergie in the dug out.
Ferguson is set to be offered the post until the end of the season and could be joined in the dugout by Kevin Thomson and Neil McCann for Wednesday’s trip to face Kilmarnock.
Clement has overseen a calamitous campaign that has seen Gers fall 13 points behind Celtic in the table, lose the League Cup Final to their arch rivals and suffer the humiliation of being dumped out the Scottish Cup at home by Queen’s Park.
Saturday’s dismal 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren proved the final straw for the board who watched on as thousands of punters streamed out of the ground long before the final whistle sounded.
It seems that current first team coach Alex Rae has been overlooked from the process, in all of his management roles Ferguson has been assisted by Bob Malcolm, known as the Brains Behind Barry in footballing circles.
At the start of last season Ferguson accepted the offer of becoming a club ambassador, a role that he has excelled in with his comments on Go Radio and a hilarious column in the Daily Record.
Since being mutually consented by Alloa in February 2022 there has been no speculation of a return to management for Ferguson, however, according to the Record he is about to be fitted out for a club blazer and the brownest of brogues, walking in the shoes of legends like Micky Beale, Graeme Murty and Pedro Caixinha.
The Record reports:
Legend Barry Ferguson is set to be offered the chance to become Rangers manager.
The decision comes after Philippe Clement was been shown the Ibrox door by Rangers following showdown talks after the defeat to St Mirren. CEO Patrick Stewart has insisted he would resist calls to sack the boss – pointing to the manager’s Europa League success this season as one of the key reasons for keeping him in place. However, the defeat to Stephen Robinson’s side proved to be one step too far for the board as they took the decision to axe the Belgian.
Record Sport understands that Ibrox icon Ferguson will be given the chance to lead the club until the end of the campaign – with the club eyeing a temporary successor. A whirlwind deal could be completed within 24 hours with talks ongoing between the iconic former skipper and?Rangers?powerbrokers. It’s not the first time that Ferguson will have stepped into the dugout. In June 2014, the he took his first steps into management as he joined League Two side Clyde.
After a mixed first season with The Bully Wee, he would leave them to the promotion play-offs – and reach the final before suffering defeat to Queen’s Park. He would struggle in the following campaign – leaving Clyde in the midst of a relegation scrap. However, he would revive his managerial career at Kelty Hearts.
The Record and Rangers Review are likely to have first news of Ferguson’s appointment with a pre-match media conference for the Kilmarnock match scheduled for Tuesday.
