Derek Ferguson is the latest former Rangers star to discover that life in the media brings a few challenges as well as a flow of comps and easy access to the half-time pies.
Most pundits can string a few cliches together to fill up air-time, fortunately for Fergue Snr BBC Scotland decided to make a project of the former Hearts midfielder as his colleagues showed him the ropes.
Despite 20 years on air Fergie has still to grasp the broadcasting basics such as completing sentences using basic grammar but being a right good Blue Nose allows Fergie to be Fergie as they pretend that he has some sort of affinity with Hamilton Accies.
Supporting a Diddy Club is always encouraged with St Mirren and Airdrie fans always in favour with the state broadcaster going back to the epic days of Chick Young and James Traynor.
Sunday’s Scottish Cup win for Queens Park was the ultimate Diddy Club success, something that BBC Scotland reluctantly had to embrace.
Richard Gordon managed it, he is a declared Aberdeen fan but being neutral, embracing a cup upset and talking up a ‘great story’ was a test too far for Ferguson’s professionalism.
You can listen in at around 45 minutes in the SPORTSOUND PODCAST
Richard Gordon: And of course, there could be further repercussions. We await, I guess, to find out what emerges over the next few days from a Rangers point of view.
Just in terms of a final thought then from you guys, Derek has a darkened room to go and recline a little bit later on.
Derek Ferguson: You seem to be enjoying this too much, Richard in how I am going to be feeling tonight.
Gordon:
No, Derek, you know, like you, I’m just a fan of Scottish football. So look, these moments do not come along very often. And gosh, I’ve been covering it for many, many, many years.
And I don’t know how many times we have been on the verge of something big happening, a big team being knocked out by a smaller team. And then something happens right at the end. They concede the goal.
I mean, if it goes to extra time, then quite often the big team then runs away with it. So it is so, so rare for it to go all the way.
Finding out that at the end of this season that it will be three trophies out of 42 rather than three out of 27 was another shock to Fergie but probably not to any of his school-teachers.
