Ally McCoist believes that if Phil Clement had signed Lawrence Shankland last January Celtic would have missed out on winning the SPFL Premiership title.
Last night the 51-year-old Belgian was sacked from his job with just one League Cup triumph to show for 16 months in charge at Ibrox.
After 10 weeks to assess his playing squad Clement signed Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande in his first transfer window while Shankland was in the middle of an incredible scoring run with Hearts.
Despite media speculation of interest Clement never seemed convinced about the ability of Shankland who picked up the PFA Scotland Player of the Year Award.
In February Clement side moved two points ahead of Celtic in the title race but the hoops stormed back to take the title by eight points.
After losing the Scottish Cup and League Cup to Celtic falling 13 points behind to Celtic proved to be too much for the Ibrox board who sacked Clement last night.
Listening to McCoist on TalkSPORT, the Daily Record reports the former Rangers boss saying:
I actually think if they had gone last year and got Lawrence Shankland (last January), I think they might have won the league, I genuinely do. If they had gone and given Hearts whatever they wanted, Shankland might have scored the goals which won Rangers the league.
It wasn’t to be, Celtic deservedly came back and won the league. The decline in the club, on and off the pitch, since they won the league and were beaten in the Europa League Final, it hurts to see.
Last January Celtic signed Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna and Adam Idah on loan from Norwich with the Irishman scoring a number of vital goals in the SPFL plus the decisive goal in the final of the Scottish Cup.
