EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND - FEBRUARY 22: The LED screen shows a message which reads 'Decision no goal ball out of play' during a William Hill Premiership match between Hibernian and Celtic at Easter Road, on February 22, 2025, in Edinburgh, Scotland. (Photo by Craig Foy/SNS Group via Getty Images)
Alan Muir was wrong to disallow a ‘goal’ scored by Daizen Maeda for Celtic away to Hibs.
That is the view of four members of the SFA KMI panel who reviewed the 90 minutes from Easter Road.
Trailing 2-1 at the time Maeda netted after a spill from Hibs keeper Jordan Smith with Steven McLean and his assistant David Roome satisfied with the goal,
In the VAR room Muir reviewed it and decided that the ball had been out of play before Alistair Johnston cut the ball back.
Premier Sports showed the match live but were unable to provide evidence to back up the decision, BBC Scotland and Sky Sports also failed to provide evidence.
After the match Brendan Rodgers said that he assumed that there was evidence but six days later the SFA are admitting that Muir gor it wrong, costing Celtic one point, possibly three.

The majority (4:1) of the panel deemed the on-field decision of goal to be correct. They felt the factual VAR intervention for the ball being out of play was incorrect. One panel member felt VAR was correct to intervene as they belived one of the angles showed the ball out of play.
Note: Belived should be believed.
Muir is one of three full time VAR officials, promoted into that role last summer by Willie Collum.
He was left out of duty for the midweek SPFL Premiership card and is again missing from the six weekend fixtures.
The SFA haven’t made any comment on the incident but Celtic and others will be looking out to see of Muir is given any further appointments when it has been shown that he will make decisions without any evidence of a clear and obvious mistake.

So what basically happened was skullduggery was involved here?
How can Celtic win. The euro game at Celtic Park was decided on a penalty not given. Now we have decided if the defender touches the ball, but fouls the man the ref decides its no penalty.
Any other area of the park is a foul, but not at Celtic park.
The Hibs game is the same somehow rules are changed if it involves Celtic, but guess what the league is still Celtics. Scotland never changes
Editor: A semi competent CEO would be a decent start, that is why the SFA do whatever they like to Celtic.
This is serious, the official has given his subjective opinion but stated it as factual. There is no way he can continue in his job. He cheated by making a guess, there is no other way to describe it, no club can trust him to officiate their games. He has proved that either he doesn’t know the rules or worse, he doesn’t care about the rules.
I’d like to know who was on this review board and specifically which one thought Muir was right, given there was no VAR evidence that the ball had been out of play.
The individual would probably bear a startling resemblance to Robbie Coltrane’s “Mason Boyne” character….
What we have is an official acting rouge here, that isn’t his remit to second guess on field decisions without having the proper photographic evidence available.
I posted this at 1601hrs in the comments to Joe’s previous article:
The SFA KMI for the matches on 22nd & 23rd February has been posted.

As expected, Maeda’s goal should have stood. CFC lost at least one point, and possibly three because of incorrect application of VAR instructions.
The DR is also trumpetting that Collum agrees that DUFC had a game-changing goal incorrectly chalked off on Wednesday in the match against Hibs.
How can anyone watching Scottish football have any faith in the officiating of matches even with the ‘comfort’ of VAR?
Will we ever hear of officials being disciplined over these ‘honest mistakes’? I wouldn’t hold my breath. What’s the point of Martin Atkinson?
The DR is a pathological LIAR !
have you noticed that it is usually a split decision just to keep some sense of impartiality.
Muirs a Cheating Hun Bastard.. End of! The ONLY reason he never intervened in Cup Final is bcoz Beathun had awready awarded a Free kick! Shd be NAEWHERE near oor games.. Been SHAFTING US FUR 10 YRS!!
Every time Celtic are denied a legitimate goal or penalty by VAR or biased referees I think back to street graffiti in Belfast in the 1990s referring to a proposed ‘power-sharing agreement’. THE MAN FROM DEL MONTE SAYS NO AND HE WAS AN ORANGE MAN TOO.
Fuck this KMI as it’s a bloody underhand body as Dundee United honestly declared…
I’m not listening to Clyde Superscoreboard this week fo obvious reasons but does Collum not come on with The ‘Motherwell’ fan to give HIS take on it..
As I say – That other thing is a fuckin SHAM !
So, does that confirm that Muir was lying – or just totally incompetent?
Either way, how can he be trusted as an ‘impartial’ VAR ever again?
Akin to a police officer caught committing perjury in court…?
