The Daily Mail is far from impressed by Brendan Rodgers’ record in the Scottish Cup.
Winning 20 ties over a period of seven years broken up by winning the FA Cup with Leicester seems fairly impressive but there are always detractors to be found when it comes to Scotland’s Most Successful Club.
In 2017 Rodgers became the first manager in the history of Scottish football to win an invincible treble, a year later he became the first manager to win a Double Treble.
Normally that sort of record would be fully respected but the Daily Mail preferred to take an alternative view of it:
Of those 20 victories that Rodgers has presided over, 12 have been at Celtic Park and six at Hampden, where the semi-finals and finals are held.
Just two of the ties have been elsewhere. Rodgers’ first experience of the Scottish Cup was a 3-0 win at Albion Rovers, and there was a 2-0 triumph at St Mirren last year.
Interestingly, that Albion Rovers game was played at the Excelsior Stadium, which means that only one of Rodgers’ 20 Scottish Cup ties has been held at the home of Celtic’s opponent.
The draws have been kind alright, but Rodgers and his players are to be commended for taking full advantage. His flawless record is one of which he can be rightly proud.
After Rodgers left Celtic in February 2019 they were won away to Hibs before beating Aberdeen and Hearts at Hampden to make it a Treble Treble.
The Mail could have compared Celtic’s Scottish Cup ties this season against Kilmarnock, Raith Rovers and Hibs with Phil Clement’s side who were paired at Ibrox with Fraserburgh and Queens Park.
Six successive wins at Hampden is a very impressive Record, over the last eight years Celtic have only lost once at the National Stadium in the Scottish Cup.
That was in the 2022 semi-final which is best remembered as Bobby Madden’s farewell to Scottish football, he managed that fixture exactly as expected.
