John Swinney has come under fire for supporting the current alcohol ban in Scottish football grounds.
When it comes to the national sport there is barely a politician out there with knowledge or understanding of the national passion that covers almost the whole country.
Last summer Swinney was Jimmied out his nut as he joined the Tartan Army in Germany, mixing with the plebs with 100,000 fans, the vast majority drinking beer, enjoying the sights and civilisation of Germany.
Anyone wanting to drink outdoors in Glasgow on Sunday ahead of the match against Greece will find a very different reaction, possibly involving a police cell.
?? “I’ve not changed my view about alcohol in football stadiums. The evidence supports the conclusions I come to.”

Apparently Swinney has evidence. Thousands of football fans also have evidence.
A Celtic Season Ticket holder is banned from alcohol inside the stadium but if he wishes to put on a suit and tie, spend £200 on a hospitality deal he can have booze poured down his face from 12 noon onwards on a Saturday matchday.
Swinney and the Scottish Government are happy with that state of affairs, alcohol is available for sale in Holyrood with MSP’s refunded for hospitality expenses on official business.
With SNP voters tending to be younger than old school unionists a measured introduction of alcohol would be a populist vote winner.
It wouldn’t result in nasty opinion pieces in the Daily Mail or angry phone-ins on Radio Scotland if Season Ticket holders were entitled to have two beers before a home match against St Mirren or Ross County.
No one is suggesting unlimited bevvy at the Glasgow Derby but as it stands fans drink before going into games, some smuggle alcohol into matches, some drink to excess because there will be two hours at the match without a drink.
Hampden can’t sell alcohol at soccer matches, it can if it stages rugby matches or hosts a concert. A similar audience/crowd can attend the events.
Swinney and the Scottish Government aren’t capable of reading the room on a issue that attracts over 100,000 people to matches every weekend.
It isn’t a smart or clever look to be disrespecting a significant section of society, many who will be sympathetic to the policies of the SNP.

Smirking, patronising tone. This is purely class prejudice.

Swinney and the SNP hate football fans. As highlighted by their dogs in uniform at the weekend. Tartan tories hate the working class.

Alcohol for working class football fans – NO
Alcohol for rugby fans – YES
Alcohol for corporate types at football – YES.
Seems like it’s ok for the few, not the many ????

Waffling shite here.

Let’s be clear on this alcohol is freely available in all the hospitality lounges at most SPFL football stadiums for those who can afford it. It’s only the “great unwashed” in the public concourse areas who are not allowed.

Actually John. The evidence says that you order more alcohol before attending the game as you try to squeeze more in knowing you won’t get at the game. Binge drinking and alcohol abuse exists because of the laws around where and when people can buy alcohol in Scotland. This issue…

This year, I’v been to Man City v West Ham, Newcastle v Bournemouth & Bayern Munich v Celtic, fans can buy alcohol on the concourse, not once have I seen any issues with it, but in Scotland it’s only the rich in hospitality lounges that can drink.

Our stadium being smashed up last weekend is all the more reason to drink away from the stadiums.
Now on to another issue wee Barry the sevco manager is demanding a job at ibrox for SOURNESS,his bestie Knob Malcolm won’t be best pleased at being overlooked,I dare say he can give him first dibs on a patch at the stadium to sit his ice cream van outside.
The SNP hate drink full stop! Its a ‘wee free’ mentality that see’s them charging on average £5 more per bottle of spirits compared to England. I view it as a tax on enjoying yourself.Total double atandards at every turn. Mind you they might overturn in a late attempt to cling on to power!
I’ve been at them and at them about the drink policy (minimum pricing) but to no avail…
I’ll still of course as a Nationalist vote for them until someone like Sinn Fein Scotland appears on the scene…
I don’t know much much about Swinney but he has the personality of that telegraph pole out in ma back garden – None !
Nicola cleared of wrongdoing – The Sevco liquidators cleared of wrongdoing –
Whose next to be cleared – The Parkhead Seat Destroyers… Sir Valcay Cerny OBE – Oh fuck, silly silly me, they’ve now been even charged yet !!!
They approach this from the wrong angle and always have. Instead of proposing an overnight change in the law and the instantaneous return of the “whisky olympics” at CP and iBrox with the attendant 1970s style mayhem they should begin with a pilot scheme, in League Two, to examine whether the fans of Forfar and East Fife can be trusted to behave themselves with a plastic beaker of lager. If you feel there is sufficient justification don’t do it at any particular fixture that might be higher risk – local derby, promotion or relegation playoff, Ne’er Day etc – but when it inevitably concludes successfully, you extend it to to League One and then the Championship and eventually the Premiership. Anyone who has been to Newcastle or Sunderland, the nearest major stadiums in Engerlund (or any others for that matter) will find it impossible not to notice the huge bars they have inside the stadiums which do a brisk trade but do not lead to Al Capone style behaviour or regular live re-enactments of The Football Factory (incidentally anyone at a loose end and thinking of going to see ‘Marching Powder’ at the cinema, don’t. Just don’t.). If “safe standing” can be successfully trialled through pilot schemes there is no reason this can’t be, but in a nanny state where the incumbent devolved administration is extremely proud of its minimum alcohol unit pricing policy that has us paying the highest prices in the UK the barriers are less logistical than they are ideological….. except for one small issue: it’s legal at rugby matches!! Just about the only good thing Kenny MacAskill* did was change the law for egg-chasing enthusiasts at Murrayfield and Scotstoun and that is the starting point – one rule for the plebs and another one for the chattering classes has a name in legalese, and that name is ‘discrimination’. This is a battle waiting to be won.
*the former Justice Secretary was perhaps better versed in such matters than we give him credit for – he had ‘previous’ himself having been huckled at Wembley for being drunk and disorderly at the Euro 2000 playoff match in 1999 (the one at which Don Hutchison scored the winner).
This man is responsible for many of the biggest disasters in Scottish government inc. The Edinburgh Train fiasco, Curriculum for Excellence, Named Person and many many more.
I laughed, then cried when they announced he would take over from Sturgeon as he was “a safe pair of hands.”
He seems to be ta nice guy who isn’t very bright but obsessed with politics. We all know one.
That’s the thing with the Politicians (whatever party), they find legislation easier than education, and as a result we have discrimination. Tell them they are arseholes when they come to your door, and tell them why. I draw up a list every election and question them before telling them I’d rather vote to have pins stuck in my eyes.
Would you mind printing your list so we all could use it? Sounds a great idea.
SCOTTISH SINN FEIN IS THE ANSWER !!!!!
Cannot for the life of me understand anyone supporting alcohol in stadiums in Scotland.
Don’t even need to go into the reasons whu.
