Gordon Strachan has gone against the tide by warning about the nastiness that will come with around 2,400 opposition fans at Sunday’s Glasgow Derby.
Michael Nicholson has been working tirelessly to get away fans back to the fixture, since 2018 it has varied between 0 and 700 visiting supporters.
Extensive work has been carried out at Celtic Park with nets installed to prevent missile throwing with away fans back at the fixture for the first time since September 2022 when Ange Postecoglou’s side cruised to a 4-0 victory.
The netting won’t be able to mute the songs from the Ibrox support which are likely to be in breach of the Ground Regulations at Celtic Park.
In 2019 UEFA took action by closing areas of Ibrox due to sectarian songs from supporters.
Strachan has a track record for being contrary, of independent thought but on this occasion he speaks for many while legacy media outlets drool about the return of atmosphere, or poison as many would prefer to call it.
Speaking to Makthavare, the former Scotland manager said:
I know everybody wants it, but I wasn’t sure I quite enjoyed the atmosphere with the nastiness that comes, because I wanted to promote the Scottish game throughout the world. There’s no doubt about it. There’s a nastiness.
And it’s funny, I went to the World Cup. It was Argentina versus somebody. And I was sitting with Gus Poyet, and the atmosphere was fantastic. I told Poyet, ‘This is great, isn’t it?’ And Poyet told me, ‘What they’re saying is absolutely horrendous.’
I just worry about that kind of thing, the violence. I’m a softer kind of person than the rest-of-Scotland person and I don’t think you need it. A bit of colour, I’ve got it.
If I’m a fan, my first objective is to go to the game with my family and feel safe. So, I’ve got a bit of concern about that.
Strachan’s son Gavin will be on the Celtic bench alongside Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy on Sunday.
Tannoy announcement when the bile starts should be a definite, recording should also be sent to UEFA alongside audio.

Under current SFA/SPFL rules & regulations it’s the home club that is responsible for the behaviour of ALL spectators within the ground. There’s no Strict Liability in Scotland. CFC would be reporting themselves.

I see that the MSM is reporting that Police Scotland is investigating the illegal, organised march from Cessnock to Ibrox last night. That march wasn’t authorised or licenced by GCC, but it was widely trailed on both MSM & social media. PS could have stopped it happening, but chose not to, only to investigate after the fact. That’s typical, isn’t it?
