Ally McCoist highlighted his own ignorance or incompetence on co-commentator duty at Ibrox last night.
Twelve minutes into the match against Athletic Bilbao Robin Propper was turned by the speed of Nico Williams just outside the penalty box.
The Dutch defender then lunged in to wipe out his man, as most armchair fans shouted for a red card the team at TNT Sports decided to ignore that issue by conforming that it wasn’t a penalty and speculating over the outcome of the free kick.
Fortunately the match officials weren’t selected by the SFA.
As the players prepared for a free-kick play was halted, referee Istvan Kovacs was called over to the VAR monitor to review the incident.
Television viewers knew what was about to happen, McCoist, shounding increashingly like Shir Sean Connery with each passing week was furious that the Laws of the Game were applied.
Covering the issue The Sun reported:
Speaking with Alan Hutton and Alex Rae on TNT after the game, McCoist said in an astonishing live on-air meltdown: “I was listening to the boys talk about the decisions.
“The sending off is nothing short of scandalous, I think. Don’t try and tell me ‘the laws of the game this, the laws of the game that’.
“Anybody who has played the game at any level knows that is not a red card. It’s a disgraceful decision! And it spoils the game.
“It’s not a sending off. If those are the laws of the game, the laws of the game are wrong!
“It’s a tackle! It’s a mistimed tackle and a free-kick, you can’t be sending people off for that!”
Hutton explained that he felt it was a red card because Propper looked to be the last man, and Rae said Williams “would get a shot away”.
But McCoist continued: “I’m arguing the laws of the game are wrong.
“Guys, you canny be sending people off, that is a mistimed tackle, there’s no intention to prevent him getting a goal-scoring opportunity, it’s just a bad tackle.”
Ally you’re beginning to sound like Michael Stewart.
Don’t be Michael Stewart. You’re better than that.

It seems that McCoist has spent too long watching John Beaton, Steven McLean, Don Robertson, Nick Walsh and other making decisions ‘for the good of the game’ in front of compliant broadcast partners.
It is long established that if you deny a Goal Scoring opportunity 20 yards from goal you are sent off, if it is 18 yards or less the offender is booked and a penalty awarded.
It is hardly a new development, the only recent change was booking rather than sending off the aggressor when contact takes place inside the penalty box.
TNT commentator Rory Hamilton decided against explaining the Laws of the Game to his mate in the commentary box.
I.e. it’s a red card but why can’t the ref be like the Scottish refs and let us away with that?

What a horrible old cxnt of a face .
McCoist clearly upset that the laws of the game were applied as they should be ,by a fair and impartial ref. Something that this embarrassing, slavering fan boy commentator is not used to seeing against His team.
As for his condescending comment on the tackle, anybody that watches football never mind playing it ,at any level ,can clearly see that a goal scoring opportunity was definitely denied when Propper took out Williams.
I’ll tell you this, Joe ,I’m absolutely astounded, absolutely Joe ?that this cretin still gets a gig, anywhere!
Editor: Ah sha lootley Fletch.
If Sevco had Euro refs in the spl every week u would see this every game wi them, just shows u how protected they are here
I’m only surprised that Super Swally whilst castigating the sending off of a proper Propper , did not say live on TV ” let me phone big Boydy..he will back me up ? “
Fat bigoted FUD…with more faces than the Town Hall clock. That tirade last night should get him the sack…I know it won’t..but it should.

Wolverine’s grandad spewing his bile, see his cheeky chappie mask slipped, still he has his 1p ‘gifted’ shares to cheer him up….
HH
The cheeky chappy is an absholute fanny so he is absholutely
He’s a wee bigot and the mask is slipping as he gets older or maybe more emboldened by what he’s getting away with like most huns. The laws of the game are exactly that, the same as the laws of the country. If you break them and get caught you take the punishment, e.g. if someone punched that wee runt in the face they would expect to get charged with assault
That beard does him abshhhhhhooooooooeeeloutly no favours whatsoever…
Can Cerny not give him some water to get rid of it –
Thank Fuck that I shave every Tuesday and Friday – Especially in ma old age !
Alex Rae chased out the place only a few weeks ago for his part in the most embarrassing result in their short history
