Most tedious treble of all time! Daily Mail hits the gutter as bitter hack trashes Celtic glory bid

Calum Crowe is hurting, hurting badly at the prospect of covering a Celtic Treble success over the next couple of weekends.

It appears that defeat in Bilbao has badly effected the Daily Mail reporter who can’t hold back on his personal angst over Scotland’s Most Successful Club.

Taking a trophy haul to three above what was once described as the World’s Most Successful Club is surely worthy of a little bit of cheer, surely?

A possible sixth treble in nine years is praiseworthy, another Scottish club that cheated Her Majesty, every club and every fan in the country for decades only achieved one treble this century before they were ushered off to the mortuary.

Their Tribute Act has only managed three meaningful trophies over 12 seasons but even getting paid to cover football Crowe can’t hold back on his distress at an incredible story of success unfolding on his watch.

As the Celtic fans poured out of Hampden and basked in the warm glow of the late afternoon sunshine, Brendan Rodgers was holding court in his post-match media conference deep in the bowels of the national stadium.

A 5-0 hammering of St Johnstone had booked his team’s place in next month’s Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen, moving them one step closer to yet another clean sweep of trophies.

In the aftermath, assessments of such a horribly one-sided contest were never likely to be the main talking point.

Had it been a boxing match, the referee would have stopped it long before the end of the 90 minutes as a punch-drunk St Johnstone side could defend themselves no longer.

The game itself became an irrelevance. Instead, Rodgers was asked to contemplate his own place in the history books and the landmark that is now within his grasp.

With the league title all but mathematically secure, he is now essentially one match away from becoming the first Celtic manager to win three domestic Trebles.

Crowe has been on the Daily Mail for a while, stepping things up since Stephen McGowan moved on.

Writing stories to please the declining demographic following the Ibrox Tribute Act hasn’t done the Daily Record or Newsquest much good, perhaps if the Mail tried to show a flicker of enthusiasm they could hold back on the terminal decline of legacy media outlets.
