TalkSPORT’s Scottish football expert appeared to have taken the day off on Saturday if his Twitter account is anything to go by.

On the historic day when Celtic became the first club to be crowned champions of Scotland for the 55th time David Tanner’s only Twitter involvement was to retweet the news that Hearts had sacked a manager for the third time this season.

The former Sky Sports presenter has had an incredible fall from grace since the heady days a decade ago of sharing a studio with Neil McCann and Charlie Nicholas covering the SPL.

When a job like that ends, there are usually a few media friends on hand to provide you with a soft landing but Tanner appears to have been shunned across the Scottish media bubble.

Emma Dodds, Connie McLaughlin and other young bucks that don’t rely on autocue seem to be preferred to a veteran with 20 years at STV and Sky Sports on his CV.

Even BBC Scotland, crammed with talentless presenters such as Kenny Macintyre, Tom English, Alasdair Lamont, Phil Goodland and Jonathan Sutherland refused to open the door to Tanner.

After a one season gig with Hibs TV during lockdown TalkSPORT offered Tanner a media pass, covering matches in Scotland and watching European and international matches on his telly.

Saturday’s big story, the only one worthy of comment on Tanner’s Twitter

David Tanner

Last weekend he was at Hampden for the Scottish Cup semi-finals, other than one pre-match tweet from the Celtic v St Johnstone match there was nothing for his 14,000 followers to hang onto.

And that was it from Hampden, no updates for his Twitter followers.

It had been a fairly busy week, on Thursday he watched the Co-efficient champions crash to defeat to Athletic Bilbao, watching the courageous defeat at home on TNT Sport.

Tanner is expected to cover Sunday’s Glasgow Derby from his favourite perch at Ibrox, after that it is unlikely that his Twitter followers will hear much from their man with his finger on the pulse of Scottish football.

Joe McHugh has been Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.
When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.
Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement, cheers big man.
There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same more than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying every success for Scotland's Most Successful Club.

He’s just another example of the disgracefully shabby standard of inferior journalism skills of the average SMSM sports scoop currently earning a wage today ..for being so ! Big Fake Kris Boyd …Naismith …Thompson et al drawing monies when other more experienced guys do not . Who decides that the public should have to endure this practice in a digital world ?

Poor David is probably still trying to recover from the events of 3rd May 1986. Nae luck, Davie boy. His other team is not doing so well, either. It’s a wee shame, so it is.

    Hail Hail.

    Hahahaha. Elsie’s poor wee laddie.

To borrow from the late, great Clive James’ memorably excoriating introduction of Jeffrey Archer “his talents are truly beginningless”.
