Michael Stewart had the pleasure of analysing a fifth successive home defeat at Ibrox with Hibs the victorious side yesterday.
With Billy Dodds and Neil McCann currently out of contention BBC Scotland has had to dig a bit deeper into their limited contact book to provide viewers and listeners with soothing news from Ibrox.
Steven Thompson, known as lump o’ wid to his friends and family, was delivering his usual charismatic presentation. With Cammy Bell, Rory Loy and Scott Allan unavailable they turned to Stewart in the expectation that he’s be discussing a home win and the impact of the Barry Barry Revolution!
Following on from Queens Park, St Mirren and Motherwell, David Gray set his side up to contain their opponents, frustrate the home fans and leave it to Jack Butland and Cyriel Dessers do what they do best.
It worked to perfection.
Butland went down in instalments as Dylan Levitt gave Hibs an eight minute lead, Dessers missed four decent first half chances and the away win was starting to take shape.
Thompson’s expression never changed after the highlights were shown, in a decade presenting the show he has been as expressive as James Tavernier in his trademark interviews.
When Gary Lineker announced that he was leaving Match of the Day at the end of the season there was no suggestion of Thommo taking his place in the real BBC.
Stewart is likely to be required again next Saturday with the usual suspects making themselves scarce rather than be on screen for a likely Celtic Park title party.
Thompson is about as charismatic as frog soup ….
