Contract fears of Ibrox star

John Souttar hasn’t had any talks about a contract extension since October.

The28-year-old signed from Hearts in the summer of 2022 with his deal running through until May 2026.

With a career littered with injuries it is unlikely that there will be many other offers on the table but regardless of that footballers like to have some security and certainty looking ahead.

Over the last few months there has been plenty of hype and spin coming out of Ibrox about managers, takeovers and Revolutions but it seems that the contract of a current Scotland defender appears to be neglected.

Souttar told the Daily Record:

Has there been an update on my own contract? No, I’ve heard nothing. Nothing at all.

Fingers crossed that any new manager coming in would see me as someone they’d want here long term.

I spoke about it (contract extension) earlier this season with the club, around October time but apart from that there hasn’t been much communication.

So I’ll just play these two games, hopefully be involved with Scotland in June then see what happens.

Is that because of the uncertainty around the club in terms of a takeover? Yeah, potentially.

I think a number of lads are in the same position so we’ll just have to wait and see.

On Sunday Leon Balogun, Tom Lawrence, Ianis Hagi and Vaclav Cerny will no longer be contracted to the club.

The draw for the Champions League Second Round will be on June 18 with the matches played on July22/23 and 29/30.

Next summer James Tavernier, Ben Davies, Rabbi Matondo, Bailey Rice and Kieran Dowell will also be out of contract.

Joe McHugh has been Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.
When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.
Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement, cheers big man.
There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same more than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying every success for Scotland's Most Successful Club.
