Door opens for Nawrocki to make Celtic exit

Talks are underway for Maik Nawrocki to return to Poland.

The defender joined Celtic in the summer of 2023 with the intention of replacing Carl Starfelt but his career in Scotland has barely got off the ground.

Nawrocki has been involved in just 13 SPFL Premiership matches over the course of two seasons and hasn’t played a minute of Champions League football.

Like all of the signings made in the summer of 2023 it is hard to see the Polish defender having any future at Celtic.

This morning Polish site Kanal Sport reports:

Nawrocki came to Scotland from Legia Warsaw for 5 million euros. There were high hopes for him, but the Pole did not live up to them. In the previous season of the Scottish Premier League, he played only three matches, although he was praised for them.

It seems that his adventure in the West will not last long. He may move to Szczecin. Information about the talks was confirmed by the club’s director Tan Kesler. It is not clear what kind of transfer the Porters will decide on, but the most likely option is a loan.

Nawrocki joined Legia in June 2021, when he was loaned from Werder Bremen reserves. The capital club then decided to buy him and signed a contract with him until the end of the 2024/25 season. In July 2023, he was sold to Celtic.

With his lucrative five year Celtic contract not yet at the halfway stage it is unlikely that Pogon Szczecin will be able to match those terms meaning that a loan move is probable.

Gus Lagerbielke was signed during the same transfer window as Nawrocki with Celtic spending £6m last summer on Auston Trusty.

Nawrocki appears to have been fit throughout last season but with three SPFL Premiership starts and a late appearance against Falkirk in the League Cup.

    Rodgers wasted this guy.

    • Owen Mullions says:

He kicks with the wrong foot apparently according to Rodgers. Have you ever heard such nonsense from a Celtic manager?

Editor: He is bang average which is why only the fourth best team in Poland are showing interest.

      • Owen Mullions says:

Other commenters seem to disagree with that assessment

      • Terence Nova says:

You’re on yer own wi’ that comment Editor…

Editor: Seen it many times, plays three matches out of 60, folk are sick of Scales and Trusty so BINGO Nawrocki is a superstar………………… we’ll see if he gets a better offer than the fourth best team in Poland.

        • Frank Wright says:

You can only play 3 matches out of 60 if the manager insists on playing his favourite who he paid 6 million for ahead of you. By the way, he did once get a better offer than the 4th best in Poland – a wee team in the east end of Glasgow signed him so they must have saw something in him.

Editor: I wouldn’t place much faith in a Mark Lawwell signing- he brought us Holm, Tilio, Palma, Yang, Lagerbielke, Kwon, Oh, Kobayashi, Haksabanovic, Bernabei… there is a pattern there, sadly most sitting on five year contracts.

    • Edward says:

      He’s Just Another Dud,
      Under Rodger’s list.

He’s not strong enough. Without any great pace . Never seen him bully anyone.. very average in the Air.

      Most importantly no great statue..

      5 million euros.. laughable.

  • Charlie Green says:

Hell mend him for scoring that great header at a corner. Celtic don’t do corners.

  • Bhoy4life says:

Looking forward to BR signing players to fit his system rather than finding players that enable that system to be flexible.

  • Paddybhoy67 says:

I can’t see how Trusty gets a start ahead of this guy.

  • Jim Duffy says:

Nawrocki is a better defender than scales or trusty,it’s shocking the way Rodgers has treated him.

  • The Joker says:

Sevco to sign a player for free from Peterborough with a host of clubs in England and Europe looking to sign the player.
Birmingham have offered to pay £30,000 a week to the player but he has knocked that back and choosen sevco.
Aye they will be matching that £30,000 wage weekly, not!

  • Charles Antony Taylor says:

Big mistake letting this guy go. Far, far better than Scales or Trusty. Perfect cover for CCTV.
    This not a good move.
