The latest edition of theTrinity Tims podcast didn’t hold back following another wasted week in the world of Celtic recruitment.
The happy clappers were out in force as they celebrated the Nicolas Kuhn windfall for the world’s most profitable club while the rest of the support fear what is coming down the line in next month’s Champions League Play-Off tie.
With Kyogo and Kuhn sold to boost the bank balance and Alistair Johnston and Cameron Carter-Vickers unavailable the lack of quality and depth was obvious in the friendly matches against Cork City and Estela da Amadora.
The pool of Champions League quality players is getting thinner and thinner, the younger players, fresh from the Lowland League are miles short of the standard required.
No-one knows those issues better than Brendan Rodgers but the manager and his contract are all part of the recruitment riddle that is frustrating and increasingly angering Celtic supporters.
I was joined by Eric Knott from Read Celtic and James Forrest from The Celtic Blog as honest assessments of the big issues were delivered, none of us are on the rota as Celtic drop scraps to their fan media partners.
Neither a happy clapper nor a perennial whinger be…
JTT, with due respect Fans can’t sit on the fence on this issue.
We are either a Football Club with a PLC to administer and generate funds for the Football Dept or conversely, we are a PLC that is funded by a Football team.
All the Clubs revenues are dependent on the success of the Football Club. The PLC Board might be on the ball when it comes to winning Commercial, Sponsorship & Marketing Deals but its success is all reliant on the fortunes of the Football Club.
I have a bad feeling that the current squad of players back for pre season training and friendly matches are knackered with a capital ‘ F ‘ already and the season has yet to start including the CL qualification games . It’s all been way too quick to recuperate from last season’s exertions and they will be running on empty before too long , unless the money is spent on replacement players in several positions ASAP .. yesterday in fact ! Every single Celtic fan can see there is a dire need for new , fresh players , but the board cannot ? We all know that the money is not an issue , so why the delays ? Everything may very well turn out as ‘ right as rain ! ‘ But the frustrations and irritations waiting for the board to break out of holiday mode is like watching and listening to Inaction Jackson attempting to be up to date on current sporting affairs ! No Celtic fan should be subjected to this torture !
Great comment, especially the last sentence.
Remember those transfer windows under Ange,
when some players were secured even before the Scottish window was open?
All of a sudden, our transfer activity looked much more slick and professional.
Now, we have regressed to the bad old ways of silence and delay.
Will Lawwell just throw us a “Willo Flood” type signing
– just to bring in another player – and on the last day of the window…?!
[Joke. Well, I hope it is… ]
Lawwell’s the joke but it’s far from funny!
I’d put NOTHING by the bloated rat.
Celtic FC has been all the worse for him being at CP, since not long after he arrived.
Once he was relatively forced out as CEO it should have been over for him and Celtic FC should be flourishing instead of being restrained.
I really wish him ill!
Celtic PLC is run like a corner shop with the Irish golfing leech in charge and the bloated rat doing his bidding. It’s an utter and absolute disgrace and flies in the face of correct plc governance. Ach, what’s the point?
Couldn’t agree more. Every transfer under the prick is the exact same. We wait and wait and wait for the usual hard luck story. We tried our best but unfortunately we just couldn’t get the players, or he wanted too much money, the wage structure. Greedy fat cunt is what lawell is
Celtic could sign 10 players day 1 of transfer window BUT the quality would be lot lower. You start trying to get the “best” you can , then slowly work downwards. That’s the reality of Scottish football, it’s zero to do with “spending money / owners / boardroom”. The gulf between Europe’s top leagues & the rest is growing every year, which increases the difficulty in signing even young promising players. Like the guy that just signed for Norwich ( not going to butcher the spelling of his name), that is the reality Celtic are at. We are competing with clubs that can offer premiership football or very good chance to play over length of contract, Celtic ( the club) & champions league group games “cannot” compete with that 99 times out of 100. We Have To Search For The One In A Hundred !!!. That’s reality of Scottish football, it’s not the board / owner / manager / recruitments fault, as a “Country” Scottish football shrinks every season, while other grow. Celtic winning every season is great I love it , BUT that is partly why we are shrinking so quickly as a footballing country. Top Young Players want challenge “every week” , our league would struggle to challenge 2nd -3rd tier in most countries.
We have had 2 things / people that have saved us in last 40-50 years, Fergus McCan he saw the future, built stadium so we could compete ( although he was “HATED” while he was at the club), the other is a combo of La well & Desmond, again they are hated but time will show like it did with Fergus that they were correct.
Always plan for long term, don’t worry about tomorrow.
Editor: Incredible how Abada, Kyogo, Juranovic, Giakoumakis, Starfelt, Hart, Jota, Carter-Vickers, Hatate, Maeda and O’Riley agreed to move to Celtic then suddenly the club switched to players of the standard of Holm, Yang, Kwon, Tilio, Nawrocki, Palma. Makes you think…
