Russell Martin still has the backing of Ibrox chiefs Paddy Stewart and Kev Thelwell.

Last night’s 6-0 defeat away to Club Brugge intensified demands from supporters to bin the former Southampton manager.

Three wins in 10 matches wasn’t the Revolution expected when Martin emerged from seven rounds of interviews to succeed Barry Ferguson to lead the 49GERS into a bright new future.

Most fans were against Martin from before he was appointed, results have confirmed to the undecided that he is another dud that talks well in interviews with their anger spilling over at matches.

Away to St Mirren on Sunday Martin took two steps towards acknowledging the away support when he did an about turn as soon as he realised the level of hostility to his hipster style of management.

After spending some time hugging trees Martin’s side were 5-0 down at half-time to Brugge with the message from supporters blunt and to the point.

Covering the post match media conference The Sun reported:

On the fans’ chants, Martin added: “I can’t say anything. I apologise for the performance.

“They have been great. The only way we can respond to them is by winning the game and having a performance on Sunday to build on.”

Asked if he feared for his job, he said: “No. Patrick (Stewart) and Kevin (Thelwell), I’ve had a chat with them already, and they are amazingly supportive.

“They understand this may take time. They knew that before we came in. They understand the club’s position.

“The only thing we can do tonight is accept the pain, accept the humiliation, accept the hurt that we all should feel and use it as fuel.”

After relegating James Tavernier to the bench last night, overlooked for Max Arrons, Martin saluted the performance and leadership qualities of Captain Disappointed as an example to the rest of his squad.

Jack Butland, John Souttar and Danilo were the only players that started last night that were outwith Russell’s summer Revolution.

Surely the dictionary definition of schadenfreude must now be accompanied by a wee picture of a Celtic supporter.
