A Celtic legends side will take on Feyenoord on October 12 in the inaugural Wim Jansen Cup.
It is three years since Jansen passed away, leaving a unique stamp on both clubs, helping Feyenoord to win their only European Cup in 1970 then managing Celtic to the Scottish title in 1998- their first in a decade.
On an emotion charged afternoon Celtic beat St Johnstone 2-0 with Henrik Larsson opening the scoring to end a decade of pain.
That match was the last time that Jansen took charge of Celtic in a competitive game with a contract issue coming to a head.
Jansen formed a lifelong bond with Murdo MacLeod, his assistant manager, with the former Celtic midfielder likely to be involved in the October 12 match in Rotterdam.
The Feyenoord website reports:
Feyenoord will play a Legends Match against Celtic at De Kuip on Sunday, October 12th. Heroes from both clubs will face off in a special match, the proceeds of which will benefit the Feyenoord Foundation.
By organizing the Legends Match, both clubs are raising money for the Feyenoord Foundation’s social projects. Feyenoord and Celtic, who share a long-standing bond, will compete on October 12th for the Wim Jansen Cup. This trophy is named after the former player, who passed away in early 2022 and holds iconic status at both clubs.
The Feyenoord Legends squad is already taking shape. The team will face the Celtic legends, led by Bert van Marwijk, UEFA Cup winner with the club in 2002.
The names already confirmed: Graziano Pellè, Dirk Kuyt, Royston Drenthe, Daryl Janmaat, André Bahia, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Karim El Ahmadi, Patrick Paauwe, Salomon Kalou, Ruben Schaken, Hossam Ghaly, Nuri ?ahin, Eljero Elia, Jan-Arie van der Heijden, Pierre van Hooijdonk, and Glenn Loovens.
There are a large number of Celtic fans in Holland and Germany likely to travel to the legends match while a weekend in Rotterdam will carry appeal to many Scottish based fans.
In 2023 the two clubs met in the Champions League with a home win for each.

Wim Jansen should have been our manager for far longer than he was. Unfortunately, he was chased out of Parkhead by Jock Brown. Jock Brown? A fat bluenose bastard who knew nothing about football, overruling the man who did. Does Jock Brown remind youse of anyone currently on the PLC board?

The Wim Jansen Cup is a great idea, it is a fitting tribute for both Feyenoord and Celtic to honour his memory with a legends match.
Just glad it’s not Ajax then – Their fans seem to hate Celtic supporters !
