The substance of the Celtic swoop for Vardy’ story doesn’t seem the most convincing.
Henry Toliminson is the man with the story, just before 2pm The Sun reported that the former Leicester striker has his heart set on a reunion with Brendan Rodgers.
He may be in for a bit of a wait on that one.
Only some fairly senior reporters will know who Vardy is going to join, very few reporters know what Celtic are planning in the transfer market, most sources appear to have given up with linking wingers to the SPFL champions.
Alongside his name on the Vardy scoop Tomlinson is described as a Freelance Sports Reporter, if he can up with stories of that magnitude he’ll be getting tied down to a contract sharpish.
Tomlinson has been contributing to the English edition of The Sun since 2022, he has previously worked for the Brighton Argus and some local publications in London.
At 5pm today his scoops and swoops had attracted 2,313 followers on Twitter which is always a decent guide to how popular any reporter is.
The Vardy for Celtic could be the big story that attracts thousands of followers for Tomlinson alongside ITK status but it is a push to see how he might have worked on contacts with Vardy or Celtic to put this story together.
Early this afternoon The Sun reported:
JAMIE VARDY has his “heart set” on a move to Celtic, and an emotional reunion with Brendan Rodgers – as he targets playing on until he is FORTY!
SunSport can reveal the ex-England ace is “desperate” to complete a move to Scotland before the window slams shut.
And although Brendan Rodgers is keen to add the former Leicester City legend to his squad he faces a battle to secure his signature.
That’s because West Ham, Brentford and Wrexham are all still tracking the forward as they look to bolster their own front lines.
Vardy, 38, has been searching for a new club all summer but has been keeping himself fit with a personal trainer.
Sources close to the star say he is ready to play, and still believes he can compete at the highest level for one or maybe two seasons.
It means he could still be playing top level football until he’s 40.
A source told SunSport: “Jamie still believes he can play week in week out and has a lot to offer.
“He’s a model professional and is keeping himself in great condition.
“He’d love to move to Celtic and really has his heart set on that move.
“He loved playing under Brendan and thinks he could be a massive benefit to the team up there. In fact, ever since it became clear Celtic were up for the deal Jamie’s been desperate to make it happen.
“But other clubs are keen to so time will tell. But one thing is for sure he won’t be without a team at the end of August.”
It is a surprise that Vardy remains without a club with the season in England underway, at the age of 38 it isn’t going to be easy to retain fitness then find match fitness.
Finding the sort of salary that Vardy will expect is unlikely to be occupying Michael Nicholson’s thoughts, getting match fit around UEFA ties with international breaks in September, October and November will be almost impossible.
With three other clubs named it looks like the Vardy camp are hoping to sniff out an offer from elsewhere to their liking, it looks like there will be heartbreak for the striker as he misses out on a Rodgers reunion although that issue is likely to be raised when the Celtic manager previews the Champions League Play Off against Kairat Almaty tomorrow.
Tomlinson’s profile in The Sun reads:
Henry is a freelance sports reporter at SunSport. He joined the company in 2022 after spending time in local news at the Brighton Argus and in South London at publications such as NewsShopper and the Wimbledon Times. While working in local news, he covered stories such as the Mod Weekender in Brighton and also had knives thrown at him by a circus act. Henry also spent time covering West Ham for Green Street Hammers as a correspondent before taking on the role as a Site Expert. He has also covered football abroad in America and Italy for online outlet Vavel.
The Trinity Tims will be broadcasting live tonight at 6.30pm.
If hes that desperate to come then Brendan will have no problem?
Talking of transfers…
Lille have ‘reportedly’ had a loan bid rejected by sevco for Igamane.
I was just shocked that Lille had actually made a bid – of any sort – to sevco,
as they were forever being ‘linked by the SMSM’ to sevco players in the past,
but don’t think a bid was ever made by the French club, for any player at all?
For example, I came across this classic headline from The Sun in 2020;
“NO MOR
Lille to test Rangers’ resolve with £18m take-it-or-leave-it bid for Morelos.
Colin Duncan
Published: 22:41, 21 Sep 2020”
[Their ‘bid’ must have got lost in the post? 🙂 ]
So sevco are looking for a combined£40+ million bangers for the Morrocan Messi and Ronaldo Raskin.
So why don’t the parent club give those players the wages that they value them at then.
Because if they don’t sell them and are left with them after the window closes, how they justify paying them the lower wage when they are supposedly worth many millions more.
I wouldn’t laugh at the rumour about Vardy coming to us,at least we know what we are getting.
The others have been a pig in a poke or a lucky dip.
