Last May in an open letter to Season Ticket holders Brendan Rodgers discussed how ‘we aim to make more exciting new additions to ensure we are the strongest we can be’.
That was after the signing of Kieran Tierney had been announced.
The first match of the 25/26 season was played on Sunday, Tierney played for 65 minutes with Ben Nygren making his Celtic debut. Nicolas Kuhn has been transferred to Como with Celtic sitting on a transfer surplus of around £20m for this summer.
As debuts go Nygren was OK, quietly effective without pulling up any trees, there is enough about his profile to suggest that he will indeed be an exciting new addition, his pre-season appearances have been promising.
Alas Nygren is alone in making his Celtic debut.
Celtic beat St Mirren 1-0 with a late goal from Luke McCowan, a year earlier Kilmarnock were beaten 4-0 with Nicolas Kuhn, Matt O’Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi on the pitch.
Some might describe Sunday’s team as an example of managed decline.
It didn’t seem that way back in May with the Celtic website carrying Rodgers’ letter to Season Ticket holders:

Season Ticket holders have already had one of their 19 fixtures, Sunday’s highlights were the return of Paul McStay and the tifos for John Clark and John Fallon.
Rodgers won’t want to be getting used to deceive supporters again, a repeat letter next April is unlikely.

Weather you think Brendan was duped or not , a strong manager with any shred of integrity would not put up with this , Brendan knows his credentials are not in question, he’ll calmly walk next year into a good job and we’ll still be in the same place , call me paranoid but I think pressure is being put on Celtic not to continue winning leagues not by the Scottish football authorities, but by television and media contracts , if this is not the case , then why would our board sit on so much money????

I still say that if the board held an EGM In June and an AGM in Nov or Dec , there would be proper fan grilling and questioning about new recruits and other topics just prior to both Summer and Winter windows opening ? Let’s call it a twice yearly evaluation and review? That way there would be nowhere to hide for ‘ the greys ‘ as feet would definitely be held to the fire ! I’m not privy as to how this can be initiated , but there are guys out there who do know ! It’s not too far fetched ..is it ?
As I understand it, you would need 5% or more shareholders coming together to call for an EGM and a valid reason. It’s certainly ‘doable’ IMHO but I can’t offer the required leadership. The CST and others, GB, (bloggers etc.) may be able to help but it’s not easy to get agreement. I’ve tried various things in the past and just got frustrated.
TBH I’m seriously close to throwing the towel in. My heart will always be Celtic FC but the plc have worn me down……..

On hindsight Brendan’s letter would look more like this.
Not looking ahead to next season, with key, quality players sold by the club at the peak of their careers, we’re dismantling for the future. Cheap buys are joining other unexperienced and less-talented players, who knows how we’ll win? led by our ageing captain, Callum McGregor.
The core of the squad is wrong and we aim not to make more, exciting new additions to ensure we aren’t the strongest we can be. We are in a precarious position going into next season, and everyone at the club is unexcited for the future.
We look forward to having your season ticket money at this managed decline, and hope that you will join us again at the needing rebuilt main stand as, together, we embark on another chapter in Celtic’s disastrous European history.
Let’s await the loses, rebel in the toxic atmosphere, make for the exits with loved ones and realize that the 2025/26 season has nothing to offer.
