Kevin Muscat is on the brink of walking away from the manager’s job at Ibrox.
Over the last 10 days Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl have both said No Thanks to succeeding Russell Martin.
On Thursday afternoon Scott Burns of the Daily Record reported that a ‘broad agreement’ had been reached for the Australian to take charge.
That was all that most messengers required. It was the equivalent of white smoke as they ran with another Record Exclusive
THE MUSCAT EXPRESS
The Record then carried out a number of follow up stories about how wonderful Muscat would be.
From Barry Ferguson to Boab Malcolm and all shapes in between Muscat was exactly the man for the job.
It seems that 25 matches more than 20 years ago for a club that died of shame was the perfect base for the Shanghei Port boss to build on.
No detail was offered of the interview process. Martin went through seven rounds of interviews before being appointed.
It is unlikely that Andrew Cavenagh or Paraag Marathe visited China. Kev Thelwell and Paddy Stewart have been kept well clear of the process due to their previous.
After three days of joy and celebrations Keith Jackson broke the bad news for Ibrox fans:
Rangers’ bid to appoint Kevin Muscat appears to have dramatically stalled over the weekend.
Record Sport understands the 52-year-old Aussie has been left in limbo despite agreeing in principle to take on the role as Russell Martin’s successor during positive discussions with owner Andrew Cavenagh and vice chairman Paraag Marathe on Thursday.
It’s believed Muscat then entered into further talks with chief executive Patrick Stewart, sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Stainesson of the San Francisco 49ers.
That will be 49ers Enterprises Keith, nothing to do with the real 49ers.
And it was during these conversations that the deal hit a potential stumbling block.
Sources close to the negotiations are now increasingly concerned that it could be on the brink of collapse, leaving Muscat in charge of Shanghai Port where he still has one year left to run on his current contract.
Jackson is keen to blame Thelwell for every issue at Ibrox, much as he did with James Bisgrove.
Had an agreement in principal been reached with Muscat Neil McCann would have been in charge for the Dundee United match.
He was all prepared for the game, his tracky was washed and ironed but the phone call never arrived. His Dundee United dossier would have resulted in a 4-0 home win.
If the Muscat deal falls through it looks like Record columnist Barry Ferguson will be put in charge until the end of the season. McCann is unlikely to be invited into back into the backroom team.

Muscat walked away
Another knock back usually I’d be laughing but the state we’re in I can’t even be bothered
The million dollar question that the SMSM won’t go near
Why they all knocking it back ?
Wise Muscan…one little peek at Sevco lately and their vile support would make one-run for the hills…at speed!!
Doubt Muscat was anywhere near being able “to walk away” from anything from ibrox?
sevco is starting to make our Directors look half competent…
In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king and all that….. but it still doesn’t make our lot any better.
Kevin had agreed to zip. No broad afreement of any sort. Nonsense as usual. The problem as always from here is budget. No spend on team thanks to mangers pay off. That simple. Only idiots will take it. Step up. Bazza.
“You’re the man for us, (kev, quick, feed the papers..), now that we’re all agreed there’s fuck all money and a mob outside, sign right here..”
It’s another game of Chinese whispers, I don’t know what to takeaway from this, for Peking duck sake, this is going to dragon and on. Wok is going on? I’m bamboo grilled, I’m absolutely Beijing.
Fang rice Steamie G. won something, no way sushi have leftovers Aston Villa, he chewed have steaked. Somethings gong prawn, again, it’s come to Nanjing with dumplings Steamie G. and Danny spring Rohl rejections, although it was difficult to tell Sichuan of the buns to pick anyhow.
Chow can it go so sweet and sour with pork Muscat. I blame Ngaw Kee Thelwell and his dim sum for everything. Is this pho real? The Sevco club’s been playing a Ling a Ling of roses with managers for thirteen years, after the Che-Ting Rangers died.
Thelwell took to God mahjong to sack Hustle Martin. Shih-Ting himself from the pac of Ngoons Hu Kum tae make chop suey for Lu-Sing to many Ngems.
Confucius say “waiting for yesterday is waste of tomorrow”.
But, but, but – Did The Scummy’s not Say he was DEFINITELY going to Liebrox !
