Neil McCann closes in on his Ibrox dream

Neil McCann appears to be closing in on his dream of managing the 2012 Ibrox Tribute Act.

Last season he came in as part of Barry Ferguson’s interim management team but used that stint to push his own case to be put in charge. Effectively wee Neilly was the Brains Behind Barry.

This season McCann jumped at every opportunity to undermine Russell Martin. In management circles there is general understanding that you steer clear of your previous club for at least a season.

On Sky Sports, BBC Scotland and Premier Sports McCann has been performing to the gallery.

THE OPPORTUNIST

Jumping about the screen with arms outstretched it has been obvious for months that McCann is itching to get back into Ibrox. With Steven Gerrard walking away now looks like the perfect time.

Social media has warned the Ibrox board against going for Danny Rohl. The German hipster is seen as Martin II.

Chris McLaughlin, head of sports news at BBC Scotland, a working colleague of McCann and Billy Dodds has come up with a very strange report tonight.

Apparently there is a short-list of more than two candidates to replace Martin. When you read through the report looking for names you only find the names of who it won’t get the job

From such a vacuum McCann ticks most of the boxes and has spent the last 26 years denying the most obvious drawback to landing his dream job. He is a quick appointment, gets the club and understands Scottish football. He detests Celtic as a bonus.

On the BBC website McLaughlin reports:

Rangers have compiled a new shortlist containing more than two candidates after Steven Gerrard ruled himself out of the running for the vacant head coach’s role.

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl reportedly held talks with the Rangers hierarchy last week, before Gerrard’s withdrawal.

However, Graham Potter, who recently left West Ham United, former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil and ex-Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick – who had all been linked with the job – are not among the candidates.

Any announcement of a replacement for the sacked Russell Martin is unlikely to come in the next 48 hours.

Suggestions that fresh attempts were made to change Gerrard’s mind are not true, according to Ibrox sources.

After last season’s stint there is a reluctance on the part of both Ferguson and the board to repeat that mistake.

When his friends in the media, naked ambition and desperate need for cash McCann shouldn’t be difficult to deal with to be in the dug-out for Saturday’s match at home to Dundee United.

Joe McHugh has edited Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.

When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.

Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement.

There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same. More than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying the ongoing successes of Celtic.

How would they cope knowing it’s not a TRUE Blue Sevco fan in charge…

An Inverclyde Celtic supporter to the core growing up…

And then he went through the doors of Liebrox…

And the rest is sordid history sadly !

And yet as soon as he was booted out of Ibrox to accommodate Russell Martin he was welcomed back to the commentary team at bbc Scotland.
    I wonder WHY?

There’s no one more bitter than a soup taker. It was that wee bastard that started all the trouble when the original huns won the League at Celtic Park. He revelled in it. My late Ma who was a devout Catholic in her seventies said on the day “Id like to stamp on his face”. She was a very good judge of character.
