Chris Sutton was delighted on a number of fronts by Celtic’s 3-1 win away to Feyenoord in the Europa League.
Without doubt it was the best performance and result of the season as Martin O’Neill’s side came from behind to deliver full points.
O’NEILL’S FAREWELL?
After five Europa League matches the hoops have picked up seven points and are bang in contention to progress to the knock out phase.
During his pre-match media duties O’Neill made it clear that the match in Rotterdam would be his final European match. Some suggested that it would be his final match all in.
It looked ominous for the visitors with Ueda put Feyenoord in front after 11 minutes.
Celtic responded with some fantastic possession football and pressing. Before the break they found themselves leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Yang Hyun-jun and Daizen Maeda.

Twenty four years ago Sutton scored as Celtic beat Ajax 3-1 in a Champions League qualifier. The stakes weren’t as high tonight but the win meant a lot to O’Neill and his handover/legacy.
Celtic could have increased their lead early in the second half but Feyenoord stormed back with a few near things.

A sequence of corners put the hoops under threat with one effort coming off the crossbar and being scrambled clear.
Celtic absorbed the pressure then struck brilliantly on the counter attack in the 82nd minute.
Callum McGregor and Colby Donovan opened Feyenoord up down the right. Donovan’s low cross was met by Daizen Maeda who laid it back to Ben Nygren who fired into the roof of the net.
An away win in the Champions League evaded O’Neill during his first spell in charge.
After tonight the next Celtic manager has a fighting chance of progressing into the knock-out phase of the Europa League in the new year.
Next up is a home match against Roma on December 11, three days before the League Cup Final against St Mirren.

Maybe O’Neill has ‘the luck of the Irish’ but tactically inane and a lucky result doesn’t disprove that. Celtic won tonight, maybe, against the odds, but Feyenoord were fucking hopeless bar 2-3 players.

Everyone of the 2.500 fans who attended the game were elated by the team’s effort.
I feel happy for Martin and his family as well as for Shaun. There were times when Celtic had to dig deep to defend the goal area. Luckily, a Feyenoord header hit the top bar. Their goal keeper had an off game,
however we contributed to that. I love Martin’s humility, honesty and straight talking.
It seems that the available players have responded magnificently to Martin and Shaun. They should be
ready to “Jump out of their skins”.
