It was the moment that a generation of Scottish football fans thought would never happen. David Murray ousted.

He finally got rid of Rangers. Sold to a billionaire from Motherwell for just £1

After more than two decades of hype, spin and adulation it was all over for the man that had cheated every club, player and fan through a scam that cost HMRC millions in lost revenue.

Murray had dominated the back pages since 1988 and often featured on the front.

Nothing was too much to ask for with Murray at the helm. Later on we realised that every achievement had been bought and paid for with other peoples money.

The Bank of Scotland instantly provided a £6m loan to buy Rangers. By the time they evolved into Halifax Bank of Scotland questions were asked. When Lloyds took over the full extent began to unravel.

Murray’s thirst for fame brought an incredible array of players to Ibrox.

ADVOCAAT

At the turn of the century under Dick Advocaat the team sheet included three current Dutch internationalists, the captain of the USA and a £12m striker, a fee that hasn’t been overtaken 25 years on.

And still Murray couldn’t get close to wiping the Lisbon Lions from the record books.

The financial crash of 2008 sent a chill through his so-called empire.

When Craig Whyte slapped a pound coin on the table it ended Murray’s involvement in Rangers. Less than a year later it ended Rangers.

This summer Murray published a book, still claiming that he had been dumped by Whyte. And still the messengers nodded in agreement!

Without Murray and his schemes life has been very different at Ibrox for the Tribute Act.

Formed in 2012 by Charles Green just three trophies have been won while running up millions of pounds in debt.

Various characters from the old Rangers have been back such as Dave King, Alastair Johnston, Ally McCoist and Paul Murray are some of the names. Wisely David Murray has stayed well clear, not even turning up to watch a match.

Joe McHugh has edited Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.

When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.

Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement.

There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same. More than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying the ongoing successes of Celtic.

Two lessons from your article Ed.
Watch which books you read and that looks like a half-crown or a two pound coin.
For every pound you spend, we’ll spend two!

    Must be AI generated…?

Just can’t believe that Whyte actually had money in his pocket! 🙂

And you’d think that Minty would look a bit happier / relieved

as he knew EXACTLY what the end game was for Rangers FC.

…but he wouldn’t be around when it died!

  • Ciaran says:

The game in Scotland was rigged for years. Murray rigged it. Celtic allowed it. Money wasted on season tickets for years. Only one man had the minerals/desire to report it. Phil MacGhilla Bháin.

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Yep – And I’m one that wasted the cash on it Ciaran…

But I learned my lesson in 2005 for sure !
