Three weeks after the resignation of Brendan Rodgers Celtic have provided an update on their search for a new manager.
On Monday morning Jim White of TalkSPORT suggested that there was no appointment imminent. That was confirmed in a Celtic TV interview with Martin O’Neill.
Most of the interview consisted of chat about the World Cup prospects of Ireland and Scotland but O’Neill is preparing for Saturday’s match away to St Mirren.
It was the first official comment since Celtic and Dermot Desmond fired out statements within 20 minute of each other on October 27.
O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have been in charge for four matches with nothing heard about their future until today’s Celtic TV interview.
Celtic’s non-internationalists will be expected for training at Lennoxtown tomorrow with speculation rife that Wilfriend Nancy is close to being appointed as manager.
Fans are trying to piece together the jigsaw pieces- with the clock ticking towards facing St Mirren on Saturday.
On Friday Celtic stage their 2025 AGM, after that the fixtures come thick and fast until mid-February.
A resolution to the management issue was expected during the international break.
After an update of sorts from Jim White this morning Celtic released an interview with their interim manager late this afternoon.
Listening in to TalkSPORT the Daily Record reports Jim White saying:
We mentioned Celtic a few moments ago, they seem to be moving closer to Wilfried Nancy.
Mister Martin O’Neill – good friend of ours of course, quality guest on this show – has intimated to me that there is nothing immediate that would change his workload right now.
His workload right now is being in interim charge of Celtic. That might change before the weekend.
Celtic’s international players will be returning on Wednesday and Thursday but there is more to management than training sessions.
TIMETABLE
A rapid squad assessment is required with the January transfer window opening in six weeks time.
Paul Tisdale is likely to have a good idea of what is required in January and should have moves in place.
Whether it will be Nancy, O’Neill or anyone else appointing a new manager should be a matter of urgency.
A schedule of away matches at St Mirren, Feyenoord and Hibs over the course of nine days lies ahead for the next manager.
Progress in the Europa League is looking unlikely but full points are needed in every SPFL Premiership match in the weeks ahead.
Three international breaks have disrupted the season to date but the fixtures will be relentless from the weekend on,
Celtic have little margin for error- which makes the appointment of a new manager absolutely vital.
Looks like Mike has been deafeeing his phone again
Get them all out
Just refreshed my memory around the Eddie Howe shambles.
Lennon left in February 2021.
The Board allowed Howe to keep it hanging on for a signature during April & May.
Kennedy was interim until Ange arrived in June.
4 months.
The Board was just incredibly lucky with the Ange appointment.
Wouldn’t be surprised – in the least – if the Board tried to go after Ange again.
So that’s Nicholsons job, holding the phone
This should be a good auld laugh the AGM with Abbott&Costello in charge.
With questions waiting on answers being batted right out the park, with the promise of more jam tomorrow.
They will get away with the usual spin and the fans will accept it,they will put themselves up against the sevco board by splashing exactly the same amount on players in January as the new klub from ibrox, players cheap as chips arrivals coming in,while running all the way to bank with as much cash as possible.
