Like others Chris Sutton wasn’t surprised by Celtic’s 3-0 home defeat from Roma.
Two weeks ago a 3-1 win away to Feyenoord gave the club hope of progress in the Europa League. Perhaps even turning a corner.
ROMA WIN IN A CANTER
That theory was kicked into touch tonight. Roma won in a canter, 3-0 up at half time and dropping into second gear after the break.
During the first half Celtic barely got anything right. They couldn’t keep possession, Roma were barely tested. Given a stoppage time penalty Arne Engels hit the post. It summed the night up.
On the back of losing at home to Hearts the pressure is building on Wilfried Nancy.
He might only be in the job for two matches but his job is to deliver results. As interim boss Martin O’Neill found away, he left a decent hand-over for the Frenchman.
Chris, the board won’t support him and replace the quality we have lacked since the summer. We will still be talking about how we haven’t strengthened this time at the start of next season.

Roma scored in the sixth minute with an own goal from Liam Scales. It seemed ominous at the time.

The Italian side dominated, Celtic panicked. They had a few breakaways but the first half was played out in the Celtic half.
Evan Ferguson put Roma 2-0 in front after 36 minutes. Only one minute of stoppage time was added, enough for Ferguson to take his tally for the season to three.
There was time for Celtic to win a penalty. Arne Engels was fouled, he got up and struck the post. Trailing 3-0 Celtic were booed off the pitch.
Colby Donovan, Paulo Bernardo and Kelechi Iheanacho replaced Kieran Tierney. Ben Nygren and Daizen Maeda at the break.
Fortunately Roma dropped a gear after the break. Both teams had ‘goals’ disallowed for offside following VAR decisions.
At the final whistle there were barely 20,000 fans inside Celtic Park.
Verdicts are being made on Nancy, comparisons made with Martin O’Neill. Sutton knows how things work out for unsuccessful managers at Celtic.

I agree with you regarding Schmeichel.
He drove me to distraction last night with his distribution, especially the driven passes to Maeda who,on every occasion had a monster centre back crashing through him as the passes were too straight with no angle to them.
Still,he continued and berated anyone who couldn’t cope with his eccentric play.
Long overdue for the chop but he’ll be between the sticks on Sunday, come what may.
