Douglas Ross will be one of the assistant referees when Celtic face Motherwell at Fir Park on Tuesday.
With his Westminster salary and expenses coming to a spectacular halt in July 2024 the SFA have been nursing the former leader of the Scottish Tories back through the ranks.
Not so long ago Ross was the rising star on the flag waving circuit. Three times between December 2016 and March 2018 he was on the line for the Glasgow Derby at Ibrox. The SFA never gave him that fixture at Celtic Park.
ROSS- THE FORMER RISING STAR
In 2017 Ross fell over in slow motion during Celtic’s Scottish Cup Final win over Motherwell.
Problems with his weight and knee injuries forced Ross to take a step back from linesman duties after being heavily used during the Lockdown season.
Helpfully the SFA provide him with six Glasgow appointments between September and December 2020 which included a Celtic v Aberdeen Scottish Cup semi-final.
Incredibly Ross forgot to declare his payments for those matches in his Westminster Register of Interests. In 2024 Westminster examined 28 dodgy expenses claims from Ross.
Post Lockdown his only Celtic appointment was in February 2023 against St Mirren. To mark the occasion the Green Brigade created a special banner for the then Westminster MP and Holyrood List MSP.
Having undergone a significant weight loss Ross is back to earning appearance fees and expenses from the SFA.
MILEAGE ANDEXPENSES BONUS
The Motherwell match will involve a 380 mile round trip with a hotel stay also involved.
There are dozens of assistant referees within 30 miles of Fir Park who wouldn’t cost the SFA and ultimately Scottish football fans as much money as appointing Ross.
In June 2024 Ross stood down as the leader of the Scottish Tories following his decision to stand, unsuccessfully in the Aberdeenshire North and Moray East Westminster constituency.
David Duguid was expected to stand in that seat but while in hospital he was informed that Ross had made a u-turn and wanted to maintain his Westminster salary and expenses.
Now that he no longer has a salary as a Westminster MP or as leader of the Scottish Tories Ross will be grateful to Willie Collum and the SFA for restoring him to the Premiership rota and payroll.
