At lunchtime today Martin O’Neill announced that the match against Dundee would be his final one as interim manager.

At 5pm there was still no comment from Celtic on the managerial situation.

O’Neill was expected to step down as interim manager during the international break. Today he was discussing the fourth match since the season resumed away to St Mirren.

The 73-year-old was speaking to the media about tomorrow’s match against Dundee.

O’NEILL DROPS THE BATTON

While the first question was being asked O’Neill stepped in to announce that Wednesday’s match would be his last in charge.

It appears that Celtic’s communications team, led by Iain Jamieson weren’t prepared for that comment.

O’Neill has been put in front of the media seven times since the 2025 Celtic AGM was aborted by Peter Lawwell.

Other than criticising supporters there has been no comment from the club, not a single update on the job of appointing a new manager.

O’Neill has been using various forms of words to update on the saga. He isn’t the most direct at the best of times, as interim manager he has been treading on egg-shells.

He is wise to the ways of the media. Attempts to get him discussing Wilfried Nancy are side stepped. O’Neill hasn’t once mentioned the Frenchman who is expected to take his place.

Before he was asked a question O’Neill said:

You will be relieved to know that this will definitely it for tomorrow evening. So, I’ve been assured by the board. The new man will come in. I’m not sure in terms of the process, but I know this is definitely my last game.

Sky published that video clip at 1.52pm, there was no comment, statement or update from the club running in tandem.

At 3.24pm Anthony Joseph added to the expectations.

O’Neill’s successor faces a very demanding first week in the job, after that week things don’t get much easier.

Matches against Hearts, Roma and a cup final against St Mirren will define Celtic’s season. And the reign of the new manager. Should Celtic get around to announcing his name.

Joe McHugh has edited Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.

When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.

Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement.

There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same. More than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying the ongoing successes of Celtic.

What Martin has proved is that you do not need very expensive players to compete at this level. You just need a manger who is competent!

Editor: And one that isn’t being undermined and bad mouthed by ‘sources close to the club’ using their favoured messengers.

Maybe I’m missing something here, MON didn’t mention the new manager by name, I think he said he was handing over to a young man.

  • Bob (original) says:

“…Tomorrow’s match is also set to be Martin O’Neill’s last game as Celtic interim boss..”

Taken from the CFC website, and that’s the only reference to MON leaving,

yet still no mention / confirmation of the incoming manager?

    Weird.

[Unless the new manager hasn’t signed?! Only joking, I hope…]
