Peter Lawwell has thrown in the towel in his battle against anti-establishment supporters.
At the 2025 AGM he shouted BEHAVE at shareholders, demonstrating his contempt and disdain for anyone not showing blind devotion.
Within an hour Chairman Lawwell had aborted the meeting, after a 30 minute adjournment due to standard heckling.
Rather than show leadership Chairman has walked away, hopefully for the final time.
Bleating to the Celtic website Lawwell said:
I believe that my 18 years as Chief Executive and three years as Chairman at the Club have shown my ability to meet and overcome challenges on many fronts, but abuse and threats from some sources have increased and are now intolerable.
They have dismayed and alarmed my family. At this stage in my life, I don’t need this. I cannot accept this and so I leave the Club I have loved all my life.
From the man that was paid £3.5m in season 2018/19 from turnover of £83m.
LAWWELL AND MANAGED DECLINE
When Lawwell joined Celtic in October 2003 as CEO turnover was£67m. His salary was £250,000.
You don’t need to be an accountant to realise that his salary inflation far outstripped turnover during 17 years of stealth.
At the 2019 AGM he told shareholders that he had never viewed the 2012 Five Way Agreement.
A deal between the SFA, SPL, SFL, Rangers and Sevco 5088 their own set of football regulations, an incredible admission from the Celtic CEO. He laughed as he delivered that reply.
Asked at the 2023 AGM if he stood by that claim he said yes.

At the 2025 AGM he invited Ross Desmond to attack fans and shareholders. Midway through that speech Lawwell aborted the AGM, his last act as Chairman.
Fittingly he leaves Celtic on the back of three successive defeats with a chain of command that leads from Michael Nicholson to Paul Tisdale into Wilfried Nancy.
With the first obstacle to progress removed the Collective will be looking to remove Nicholson and Chris McKay next.
While being wary of Lawwell slivering back in as a consultant while arch-Unionist Brian Wilson delivers sneering contempt to fans as caretaker Chairman.
Lawwell will now take his place alongside Michael Kelly, Kevin Kelly and Chris White in Celtic’s history.
During a 22 year association with Celtic the club won two UEFA knock out ties on Lawwell’s watch. Both in the season that he joined, in 2003/04 against FK Teplice and Barcelona.

Celtic supposedly had one of their famous “internal inquiries” and Lawwell stepped down, presumably because he was the person found to be at fault. So why was he ever brought back?
If he wasn’t the person at fault, then who was because that person is still there.

At first I thought this was a planned exit and then thought why did he not wait until the end of the season. Hopefully it’s rats deserting a sinking ship because they’ve messed up big time and need to save the Christmas merchandise sales. We need to keep up the pressure as Desmond will be choosing the successor. More heads need to roll, a boycott before January could see off another one. Let’s face it, if the football stays the same we’re better off outside than in.
