Once upon a time they were known as the Day-late Record as they caught up with the stories that others were breaking and explaining the previous day.
That was back in the eighties and nineties when hundreds of thousands of papers rolled off the presses, were dispatched into vans and lorries through the night and sent all over the country.
A good story would be kept back as late as possible. For the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas only to keep rivals in the dark.
Readers in Aberdeen, Dundee, the Highlands and Borders would be left in the dark as a big story would be kept back to the final edition to ensure that a rival newspaper never got a look in.
Things have changed on the ‘newspaper’ scene.
The printed edition is an after thought to fleece elderly readers out of £1.90! The Sunday Mail costs them £3.20!
RECORD SPORT REVEALS- STAR STRIKER HEADS FOR IBROX
Today the battlefield is online, to see which title can come up with good news for Ibrox fans first.
In late afternoon Tomas Cvancara was a strong target for a move to Ibrox, by early evening it was re-rewrites all round as the online Record kept one old tradition going along.
At 4.10pm the Record announced to their Army of Readers:
BREAKING! Tomas Cvancara ‘targeted’ for Rangers transfer as Serie A duo in battle for frozen out Gladbach gianthttps://t.co/Z61r2Apgvu pic.twitter.com/ZRhNVV3LcE
— Daily Record Sport (@Record_Sport) January 20, 2026
The Record pinned their faith in a report from a little known website, claiming:
He has now returned to Germany, but isn’t in the first team picture and has been given time off training to sort out his future. And that could well lie at Ibrox, according to Fussball Europa. They report that Danny Rohl is targeting Cvancara to boost his striking options and that Gers are leading the way.
Then at 7.11pm we had
BREAKING! Tomas Cvancara the striker Celtic are finally to land as club in accelerated talks with Gladbach hitman ???https://t.co/sSjwm2YBjX pic.twitter.com/GjHMuL6Gbj

It seems that the Record weren’t so keen to associate a possible Celtic signing with Serie A interest. Interesting.
From the reports above it is clear that no checks are made on stories at the Record.
If a foreign source comes up with a story the Record will quickly publish it online. It seems that the most basic checks are ignored to stand the story up.
CHECK OR CZECH THE STORY OUT?
Like a call to the players agent, phoning a contact in his home country and checking it out with the ‘buying club’. Both Glasgow clubs are on very friendly terms with the ailing city publisher.
Yesterday Celtic invited their friends at the Record along to interview Kieran Tierney to fill a big space in their £1.90 print edition.
Most of their online stories will have a short lifespan, there will be another flier along within 24 hours to replace it.
Now and then the Record will look extremely foolish. In the case of Cvancara that only took three hours.
There is still plenty of fun to be had out of the Record before the transfer window closes.
Back in November we had endless reports by Michael Gannon about what an outstanding success Wilfried Nancy would be.
And there’s more, many many more.

Not for me joe, slow. Easy to provoke.
‘ Frozen out Gladbach giant ‘ when they thought the huns were signing him
Now he’s a ‘ Dressing room disrupter ‘
That pic above (R.I.P. RFC) is the one and only time that these Scummy Pathological Lying Bast*rds have ever told the Fu**in truth !
The guy’s not in the door yet but the tabloid’s have a story about him being as unpopular in the dressing room ..a trouble maker of the the worst kind possible ..a complete wrong yin ! Now is that because Celtic and not theRangers got his signature or because the Kharsi Roll rags are obliged to do so because they can ? It’s not as if the Celtic boardroom is going to sanction the publications any time soon as they are in cahoots with the snide reporting and is gladly received …. apparently !
They’re all Pathological Liars of the highest order Valentines !
