Anthony Joseph’s Sunday night Celtic transfer update

It looks like Celtic will spend the final day of the transfer window trying to sign a central defender.

Deals to bring in Joel Mvuka and Junior Amadu seem almost over the line with Martin O’Neill confirming that medicals were being undertaken on Sunday.

The addition of a right winger and striker alongside Tomas Cvancara, should, in theory give O’Neill a brand new forward line to work with.

CELTIC SOCIAL MEDIA

In the modern game it seems like only the social media clips are to be signed off. Mvuka and Amadu will likely be announced separately to give the impression of frenzied activity.

In defence there has been very little speculation over who might come in.

The Stephen Welsh situation is another variable. The defender could be involved in some sort of deal for Tawanda Maswanhise but a permanent move to Fir Park can virtually be dismissed.

Under Martin O’Neill the Liam Scales and Auston Trusty partnership in defence has been pivotal.

Having two left-sided central defenders isn’t ideal but there has been plenty of partnerships involving right footers.

THE THIRD DEFENSIVE OPTION

With Cameron Carter-Vickers unlikely to play again this season Dane Murray is the next in line central defender.

Since returning from Queens Park a year ago Murray has had very little football.

Two appearances at Tynecastle this season suggests that he is not ready to be involved in a title run-in. Ideally going out to another SPFL Premiership club would suit his development needs best.

All of that puts Welsh in limbo, frustratingly after the best run of regular football in his career.

Since returning to Celtic he has played just over 90 minutes of football, facing Auchinleck Talbot in the Scottish Cup reduces his effectiveness for Motherwell.

Previous windows tell us that there is nothing predictable about how Celtic will complete their transfer business.

It could be a late night putting together the jigsaw pieces with media outlets trying to get to the root of deadline day movement.
